I really don’t want to make a Microsoft account but many job interviews are held on Teams. I see that there is a web client which I will definitely use instead of the unofficial Flatpak for Linux.

If I create a Microsoft account with one of my privacy friendly emails (custom domain), would Microsoft start to receive the emails that that account receives? If so, would you suggest that I make a burner Microsoft account for this specific use case?

When you get invited into a Teams call you don’t need a microsoft account to join as guest. you’ll get the web interface probably.

Indeed. I always connect as a guest through the browser. Never had any issues.

Your mail goes where your MX records point. Microsoft will only see the mail if you move your mail to exchange.

If you use Linux, I’d recommend using teams-for-linux. It’s the web client, but in its own little box.

If you really want to be anonymous, you can probably run this app over Tor with the command torify flatpak run com.github.IsmaelMartinez.teams_for_linux or torsocks flatpak run com.github.IsmaelMartinez.teams_for_linux; but occasionally this causes problems. It’s also not great for calls.

I may be wrong but I don’t remember needing a Microsoft account for the web client. Click on the link, accept the usage of your mike and camera, and it should be enough. Open a private window if you want more privacy and I’m sure it will still work fine.

Aaaah Microsoft teams, the single worst platform put there.

Linux client mostly doesn’t work by not even starting

Web client doesn’t understand the concept of two open tabs, it will always kill one and require reloads

All tabs redirect Toa generic URL so if you’re in the middle of a call and the page reloads for whatever stupid reason, you’re out the call with no way back

Camera randomly disappears and if that happens, good luck

Messages many times say they are delivered but aren’t

Many times the messenger simply doesn’t receive any messages anymore until you reload the page

Entering into a chat room many times ands up with people.not seeing eachother, and everyone had to drop out and have to get back in to be able to communicate

It always selects the one audio device that isn’t connected

About half the time when I’m called I don’t get the call on my desktop, only on my mobile phone. I won’t be able to pick up and I have to call them back. If it’s a group chat I’m just fucked and I won’t be able to join

Mobile Android app is pretty much just as buggy

I had like 20 more issues and when I posted it back on Reddit on the Microsoft Teams sub most responses were “lol loser”

Oh Microsoft you suck so SO bad, never change

You can use the Office 365 Extension, create a new profile in your preffered Chromium based browser (just for Teams) and use it their (without Extension it won’t work). I would suggest use the traditional privacy protections too in this profile.
