    Chipped in a euro monthly

Most my donations go to lemmy.ca, which is my ‘home’ instance, but .world is definitely THE hub

Hi admins! Could we get updated financial info for this year? Are the costs still the same? There was a tax bill last year, is there one this year? Did you ever find an accountant? As a small point of order, it’s better to have all of the financial info up to date before asking for more money.

I setup a monthly reoccurring bank transfer last year, but I’d like to see current financial information to know if I need to adjust my transfer amount.

I’m ashamed to say that I hadn’t noticed the year, only the month, on the blog post. One of my fellow admins pointed it out, but… that’s the most recent we have, so I’ve let it stand. lol. D’oh. It may be a little bit before someone can update that, but I’m adding some links to a few specific comments in this thread for tracking, so hopefully I can poke you when there is an update :)

(And I’ve only been here a couple of months as an admin, so I only know some rough numbers - I think the costs are generally not that different, but I can’t swear to anything)

What’s a suggested donation for an average user? I currently have €1/mo set up via LiberaPay.

I don’t think there’s a suggested amount. I can tell you that €1/mo helps, for sure. I personally donate $8/mo as it’s the level I feel comfortable with. Not to encourage you to increase yours - scattered around this thread you can see a number of differing amounts, and they are all appreciated. :)

From what I know, non-profits can better calculate with regular lower but regular payments. I make a monthly payment of two Euro which isn’t the world but it’s steady, ends up a similar amount per year as you, and I won’t cancel this anytime soon.

Good on ya, but I’m a smidge paranoid about having too many recurring payments.

        Thank you!

I think if everyone did recurring we might be able to post a request like this less than twice a year, which I think isn’t too much, but it definitely is needed to help remind the one-time donators to consider donating again. But I’d definitely say it is all appreciated, though recurring does mean people will tend to set it and forget it. lol. That’s why mine is a monthly, for sure :)

You guys down there don’t always get the respect you deserve, and that includes one of the hallmarks of autumn: The return of pumpkin spice everywhere. I know Starbucks serves it globally around now, but it should be an autumn thing, not a spring thing, sooooo I’d imagine y’all are used to all that.

And if not, the dropbears will get ya for disagreeing, so there’s that :)

Ah, well, it’s, like, legally and morally autumn even if it doesn’t feel like it. lol. I grew up in Texas, so just think - you’re getting a good Texas start to the season, that’s all :) Stay cool, my friend!

There is something like that called Plebbit, it’s a good example of all the downsides of such a system.

It’s decentralized and “censorship proof” AKA completely unmoderated with all the spamming and unsavory content one might expect. The CSAM issue is mostly avoided because it doesn’t support any kind of media sharing (only plain text) due to the bandwidth for P2P connections and avoiding having to store that on the client. Last time I checked content also simply disappears when users disconnect.

The federated system is better because it’s more efficient and scales better since only a couple hundred instances have to send/receive activity instead of hundred thousands of users individually. It also helps ensure content is moderated. Admins tend to keep their own instance clean and defederate from instances that don’t.

the 90%/9%/1% rule or whatever suggests that ~90% of users won’t give any effort, so any amount of friction like installing/debugging/managing/administrating their P2P setup is a no-go

It’s already semi-p2p by the way federation works. I think it would be highly ineffective to make it actually p2p.

Imagine having every user host their own community on an instance. Then you have to federate across other users to have other content in the instance, . But instead of it being 400 instances now, it’s 77,000 instances all trying to stay current from various toshiba shitboxes.

Content aggregation is more of a “master list” problem than a computing problem to solve. Which is easier from a central repo.

Which pay option has the least fees or admin costs? Want you to get all of what i send.

My understanding is Ko-Fi which is why it’s preferred. As others pointed out, payment processors take out some fees for card usage, and my understanding is that Ko-Fi takes the least. That said, we have options because most of them aren’t too bad, and all donations help :)

Probably Liberapay. They don’t take any fees because they’re also funded via donations. The only fees that occur on there are the payment processors (banks, credit card companies, PayPal, etc), and you have to deal with those fees no matter what

One can presume the preferred option is their preference.

But the preferred option makes little sense for Europeans in the SEPA region. SEPA transfers have no fees attached by law.

5$ a month. I was just thinking about how I’d never pay for any kind of reddit anything. But this doesn’t feel all hurty in my soul. Ty for making a space that’s not hyper capitalist.

Also, we had some unexpected extra costs (over 1000,–) when we had to pay taxes for the foundation (strange, for a non-profit…). I’ll see if we can get an accountant to check this, but also accountants are costly…

    Ouch

Do you have any non-profit support organizations, local to where you have your accounts, that might be able to help for cheap or pro-bono?

Thank you for all the work you do!

I know that we look for nonprofit-help everywhere we can, but I don’t have a specific answer for you at this time, but I’ve marked this to see if we can answer you later, at least :)
