Former President Barack Obama issued a call to action for Democrats at a private fundraiser in New Jersey on Friday evening, urging those frustrated by the state of the country under President Donald Trump to “stand up for the things that you think are right.”

“I think it’s going to require a little bit less navel-gazing and a little less whining and being in fetal positions. And it’s going to require Democrats to just toughen up,” Obama said at the fundraiser

      In North America, they call leftists liberals & don’t split hairs like Europe & Latin America.

      In Europe and Latin America, liberalism means a moderate form of classical liberalism and includes both conservative liberalism (centre-right liberalism) and social liberalism (centre-left liberalism). In North America, liberalism almost exclusively refers to social liberalism.

      People in the US get seriously confused that the Liberal party in other countries (eg, Australia) isn’t liberal.

        Literally not talking about them in anyway that designating the difference matters. Clearly speaking of the left leaning folks in America.

        Also politics aren’t real. They’re made up. The definition of a liberal has and will continue to change.

          That was clear when you wrote

          Liberals, the left, progressives whatever you wanna call them

          to refer to anything to the left of center and about US politics.

          People at lemmy keep raising this left & liberal distinction, and it’s incredibly annoying, since liberal means left in US politics.

          My conjecture is that it’s the German & Euro part of the community doing it & teaching it to US novices who don’t know better. Their understanding that liberal means classical liberal conservative & their uninformed thinking that a president during Obama’s terms can push any radical change and simply chose not to out of liberalism could explain the unreal arguments & expectations they keep raising here.

      That’s the famous quote. Progress dies because everyone nitpicks it to deal. Obama wasn’t perfect therefore he is Hitler, that is what people think of this as.
