We all love open-source software, but there are so many amazing projects out there that often go unnoticed. Let’s change that! Share your favorite open-source software that you think more people should know about. Here’s how you can contribute:
- Single Option Per Comment: Mention one open-source software per comment to be able to easily find the most popular software.
- No Duplicates: Avoid duplicating software that has already been mentioned to ensure a wide variety of options.
- Upvote What You Love: If you see a software that you also appreciate, upvote it to help others discover it more easily.

Let’s create a comprehensive list of open-source software that everyone should know about!
GrayJay platform player. I use it for youtube only but it has many sources.

(Not to poop on NewPipe, but this app is better in my opinion, I swapped after their player was bugged for me and I got a bit annoyed on the devs response to not adding SponsorBlock (you can say no to a feature ofc, but he decided to add reasoning that was bad))
I find Pipepipe way more convenient for Youtube. However, Grayjay is what I use to have convenient Spotify on mobile.
@dogs0n It’s not open source
Is that repo not the code or does it have a (bad) license or something?
@dogs0n Yeah the license is not open source. It restricts use, modifications and distributions. I thought people in this community would know what the name of the community means.
Rip. I had a look and have never heard of their license before.
@dogs0n There is now a great collection of all of these openwashing cases: https://isitreallyfoss.com/
Looks like a great resource thank you for the edumacation
I mean yeah technically it’s not FOSS. But the code is open to review and doesn’t do anything shady.
@spez That’s not what open source means.
I think the term most would use in this case would be “source available”
Yeah, I never said it’s open source. There are very few puritans who would care about the licensing terms as long as the app isn’t shady.
Pretty sure the dev did add sponsor block but in another repo/app name. Or maybe it was another dev. Anyway Tubular is new pipe with sponsor block, snd PipePipe is a hard fork with other extras.
