They usually don’t but some do. I’m only cherry picking this because I don’t know much about Big Tech and FOSS. Bootstrap was developed in Twitter, React is maintained by Facebook/Meta, AngularJS was maintained by Google in the past but it’s now discontinued. Google also has Summer of Code. I’m not a Big Tech shill but the larger ones do make some contributions.
You’re talking about absolutely massive companies who represent their own shared interests. And just by volume, they will produce an open source projects through engineering culture variation within a company itself.
And represent only a fractional part of the tech workforce and companies that don’t contribute back to open source.
No, they don’t. And I didn’t know where you guys came up with this. You honestly think any real development to shit like k8s, Kafka, and most of Apache foundation software is just being tinkered with people working for free?
Sure there are areas where there is more “free” support. But the shit that runs servers and the web, highly highly corporate supported. Nothing about it is free.
That’s cute. As if commercial entities don’t contribute to foss 🤣
I bet you there is at least 3M worth of investment from folks bring paid in this thread.
They… Usually don’t.
Not a single company I’ve worked for actually makes FOSS contributions to the dependencies they rely upon.

Yeah, they do, but it’s still pennies to the dollar, and usually they only do because it benefits them to do so.
Companies using open source must be forced to contribute back fairly
Then you work for shitty little companies. These companies put in millions a year.
Yes, some do, but it isn’t an incredibly small number given the quantity of companies that rely on open source technology.

Here’s just one: https://news.itsfoss.com/huawei-kernel-contribution/
I’ve read many times that Linux wouldn’t be where it is today without the commercial funding and code contributions it receives.

Jackass. It’s not hard to even attempt to look into this shit. But this place is only for circlejerks 🤦♂️
I mean when you’re only here to call people names like a petulant child. Don’t expect good conversation.
I’d rather a place be filled with circle jerkers than assholes.
I’d rather not either, which is kind of why I came to Lemmy instead of being on Reddit. Perhaps you have found yourself lost?
But they don’t though, they take more & give less (if not outright steal)

& then they steal & engage in rugpull & never contribute.
👌👍
Moat don’t, and those that do still contribute only pennies to the dollars they’re making
