maybe I’m missing out because I don’t watch content on pornhub, but how good does a video player need to be? it’s a video player, seems like a solved problem to me.

      • no ads or sponsor crap (sponsor only if sponsor is <5s and only at the start of vid)
      • buffering is efficient and quick
      • subtitles available in widescreen, small etc
      • can change volume and resolution
      • can be judged by community with a non-karma system
      • little to no algorithm or AI slop
      • can custom select videos (by date, popularity, tags, or whatever)
      • peer to peer, decentralised and FOSS
      • privacy friendly
      • can download, usable offline
      • none of that copyright bullshit

In short, a no-nonsense normal video player without a profit motive.

Iirc PH was first with the thumbnail pop up when hovering over the timeline. They also had the “waveform” thing of where users watched the most. Sure a video player is just a video player. But all the extra features like changing quality, playback speed, buffering tech, subtitles, and so much more really add up to a better experience.

Decent buffering, decent scrubbing with thumbnail preview, double tap to skip 10 sec forward or back, proper fullscreen on desktop, and orientation on mobile. That’s just to cite the very least. Imagine how good the YouTube player is, and how smoothly it works 90% of the time. Pornhub works that smoothly 100% of the time, with 90% of the features.

TikTok doesn’t even let you scrub, at all.

I’m a seeker. When I’m on mobile and I double tap and instead of going back a few seconds it pauses and unpauses, or changes from full screen or something, or worst of all “likes” the video, I have literally left websites before and been like “I’ll find this somewhere else”. I cannot stand having to wing it with a tiny scrub bar under my thumb.

A button that skips back is fine, but often this comes without a skip forward which is sometimes annoying.

When my phone is in portrait for browsing, and then I hit full-screen on a landscape video, I expect it to rotate for me, rather than showing the video the same size it already was but with huge black bars above and below. Some sites do it, it’s not technically impossible, figure it out.

And then never use TikTok 😛

I mean, I agree that in an ideal world, people would just not use TikTok, and let it die. But they use it, because it hijacks their dopamine response, it uses pavlovian and skinnerian conditioning to trap people into cycles of behavioral control, and they don’t know or care enough to stop using it. It’s literally the same thing a drug like weed does to your dopamine receptors.

And you could say “just don’t use it yourself”, the problem is this mass compliance leaks onto every other platform. Stories/shorts were a Snapchat issue, now they’re an internet issue. Everyone is getting brainwashed, and as a result, we get shit software spilling over from their shit platforms.

Maybe I got a little too doomer with this one, but how could I not, when taking about modern day social media…

Sure, maybe in the same way that the Ford Model T-500 is a solution to the problem of automobiles.

Pornhub is a car from the 201Xs. And most other media players are varyingly from 1960 and 2025, i.e. out-of-date and over-engineered.
