Alternative for Germany has joined France’s National Rally and Reform U.K. in becoming the most popular party in its country, according to polls.
For the first time in modern history, far-right and populist parties are simultaneously topping the polls in Europe’s three main economies of Germany, France and Britain.
A poll Tuesday showed Alternative for Germany — which is under surveillance by the country’s intelligence services over suspected extremism — is now the most favored by voters. The survey by broadcaster RTL put the AfD at 26%, ahead of the ruling Christian Democrats at 24%.
This is a high watermark for the European far right, a once fringe movement whose virulently anti-immigration, anti-Islam and culture-war politics were shunned by the mainstream just a decade ago. Today, these parties have developed deep ties with President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, who openly cite nationalists such as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as inspirations on policy and tactics.
Democracy is flawed. Not everyone should vote. It assumes education and an effort to stay informed on the part of the voter.
You’ve falling for the lies that the right has been shouting for decades. We had that education, had reasonably trustworthy information outlets. Both of those institutions have been eroded and co-opted by the GOP for years and years. We are in the endgame of 60+ years of slow, calculated corruption of our institutions. Flaws have been exploited, loopholes created and repeatedly sommersaulted through.
Basing school funding on property values is a sick joke that leaves the impoverished underserved and undereducated. This is why we have a literacy epidemic. Social media and the consolidation of news outlets under billionaires have been the primary drivers of mis- and disinformation. The firehose of shit has been pumping trash down peoples throats for over a decade at this point, filling the brains of people who did not have the opportunity to learn critical thinking or media literacy with falsehoods and false hopes.
Every single person living in any country should have a voice. Citizen or not. Once you allow one group to be disenfranchised it opens the gate to more widespread disenfranchisement of other “undesireables.” We need a concerted effort to re-establish robust, evidence-based teaching that goes beyond regurgitating facts, that is equally available and not dependent on your neighbors property values. We also need independent journalism that is not beholden to the whims of a single, disgustingly rich person.
Start there. Start with figuring out how to respect and help the people around you rather than sneering and looking down your nose at them. Your mindset and solution are antithetical to a fair and just system of governance.
What if you were only able to vote if your tax load is 30% or more of gross wages?
Congratulations, you just disenfranchised many of our most vulnerable demographics from the disabled to seniors to stay at home mothers.
Every single person subject to a government and it’s set of laws gets the chance to voice their opinion. Full stop.
Ok. Sorry. Whatever you want
Here’s the problem with your conclusion, who then decides who gets to vote? By what criteria? How much support would you need? How are you going to take the right away from people? Through violence? Even if there was popular support among some partition of people against everyone else voting, how big would these partitions have to be to be justified? If 20 percent thought the other 80 percent should be subject to their votes alone, is that cool?
Say, it wasnt that extreme… say 97 percent of people believe the other 3 shouldn’t vote. 100 percent of those in the 97 percent outside of some some group X or above some minimum attribute Y believe that those in X or those who are lesser than Y should not get to vote. Maybe those people are those with low IQs or those in some cult or those who have been convicted of crimes more than once, etc. The bigger group of people peacefully and democratically narrow democracy and now they hold dominion over the nonvoter for the good of all…
What then stops them from doing the same again and again? You likely think that you will still have power, be a part of the ruling class. But what stops the rest of the voters from doing the same to an arbitrary group that you belong to? What if they say that only land owners should vote? Only those who trace their ancestry back to founding members of rhe nation? Only those who meet a certain level of capitalistic investment in the economy? Only those who wish to preserve the existing culture and way of life? Only those who believe in defending that way of life through force? Only those who belong to a specific religion and belive it has be the model for the governance of the nation? Only those that support their one party leader? Only those who literally worship this leader as a god and hold his dynasty as divine? Each step can be fully justified and will have the precedent set that all they need is the consensus of those who would usurp power from those who would be excluded by the new rules in order to strip them of their vote and any other rights they see fit. The ruling class gets smaller and smaller and more like minded, power hungry, violent, and unconcerned with the welfare of the people.
You see how your position is pretty problematic and opens a giant can of worms of abuse and autocracy?
Agreed. It is EVERY citizen’s duty to insure that they are accurately informed, and to vote.
You agreed, but then contradicted the commenter.
