196 was run by a group of mods on Blahaj who had a disagreement with the admin. They decided to move to Lemmy.world and closed the 196 community on Blahaj.
People who preferred to stay on Blahaj disagreed, and started a competing 196 on Blahaj run by a different group of mods.
Following continued backlash over the move, the mod team that migrated to Lemmy.world reopened the original 196 to attempt to save some face.
After that, a de facto 196 was never decided upon, and so there are now just 3 of them which are visited by largely the same audience.
It can be noted that the original comm on blahaj.zone gets drastically less traffic than before, and I don’t think anyone uses the .world comm at all. Most activity is at /c/onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone
We had a whole drama cycle about /c/196 trying to move. But this one didn’t even get a peep :D
I am also very curious about this. Why do we have 3 196s?

Sounds a bit like medieval pope drama.
But we get good memes out of it, so why not?
I love that comparison.
