I believe he was mormon. They are all far right, “not usually” violent, but far right. Hopefully just an outlier, but they are raised to be suspicious of anyone not mormon. That degree of extremism and paranoia could be problematic.
My wife was born and raised Mormon. When I first learned he was Mormon I looked at her and said blood atonement. Her whole face changed and she said, “better for one man to die, than a whole nation to parish”.
So apparently this is a big part of Mormonism and how they rationalized their violent actions back in the day.
