    “To a tittle” came first and likely “to a T” is an abbreviation. But sounds like no one’s completely certain. Both occurred in 1600s.

    tittle /tĭt′l/

    1. A small diacritic mark, such as an accent, vowel mark, or dot over an i.
    2. The tiniest bit; an iota. Tilde is the Spanish form of tittle.
