Democrats have finalized their plans for a state constitutional amendment to change New York’s redistricting process — joining a national battle over drawing congressional boundaries.
The changes would enable Democrats to shift as many as four Republican-held House seats to their column in the 26-member delegation — giving the party a slight edge in a state with several swing districts.
According to a memo summarizing the plan reviewed by POLITICO, the amendment would remove the state constitution’s prohibition on mid-decade changes, let Democrats approve maps with a simple majority vote, and delete a prohibition on maps drawn to benefit political parties.
It’s so stupid that this is what democracy in the United States has devolved into. But also it’s not like the Democrats can stop gerrymandering if the Republicans keep starting this shit without a national ban or something.
Devolved into? We have political images from 1812 complaining about gerrymandering in the US.
they shouldve been doing it decades ago, when REPUBLICANS were gaining power through it, its a little too late for the dnc to finally do it, they were complacent that they will get elected just by the fact that GOP always screws up one election cycle. they probably realized they are going to lose more elections either to republicans, or to more “leftists” candidates because people are getting frustated with the DNC for doing nothing, which they often dont since they are mostly controlled opposition.
