They’re defending against the “Communism bad” stance, by trying to communicate that it isn’t exactly a fair stance when talking about atrocities as it’s always powerful, authoritarian nutcases doing them. I think the logic is that if bad thing (A) (e.g. genocides) happens in both communist and capitalist societies then its not the communism that’s the factor causing bad thing (A)
