Statcounter reports Linux at 10.65% of desktop usage in North America, with Cloudflare data lending further support to the milestone.

2026 is legitimately the year of desktop Linux

What is the exact qualification in order to be called “the year of the Linux desktop”? I have been using Linux on my desktop computer(s) for almost two decades. Was my year of the Linux desktop this year also?

@victorz @recursive_recursion When it is on more PCs than either Windows or iOS.

Is that a universally held definition?

@victorz I think the Klingons and Ferengi are having doubts, but it will do for me!

For me, it’s when Linux was a viable desktop operating system to daily drive and still be fairly compatible with other operating systems, which was ages ago.

@victorz For me, that was 1993. But I always took ‘year of the desktop’ to allude to the time when it became popular with other people.
