Now, more member states are asking Italy to take back migrants under the first-arrival principle.

    Oopsie 😉

This article makes zero sense. She championed return hubs in third countries/repatriations. She didn’t champion returns within the EU.

Perhaps she didn’t make it clear enough that the idea was “send them back to where they belong, unless that happens to be Italy in which case send them somewhere else.”

Turns out you need diplomacy so other countries take them back. Fascists are terrible at that. That‘s why they conveniently never explain how they make other countries accept their terms and take back all asylum seekers at once. They sit on the issue and beg other EU politicians to take care of it instead.

Italy currently has a TFR of 1.2, far below a sustainable level of 2.1.

The last time Italy had a sustainable TFR was 1975, so there’s tremendous downwards inertia on population. Even if today’s young couples have many more children than that level, they are facing the fact that they are a much smaller cohort than previous generations.

If Italy doesn’t radically increase its fertility rate soon, it’s probably going to want every immigrant that it can get.

Well, the subhead refers explicitly to her push to “externalise” EU borders … together with the headline, this makes no sense.
