Stay tuned, as other countries demand reparations for the Ottoman Caliphate, the Mongol invasion, the Roman empire, and the Phoenician Empire. Then we move on to all the others.
I think that there is a case for wanting reparations if the effects and repercussions are ongoing, but it’s hard to see what Greece is suffering now, from what the Third Reich did 80+ years ago.
Whatever they are suffering from now, the Greek president must be desperate to distract the electorate from with this demand (which exceeds the nominal Greek GDP, by the way).
That will never happen and everyone knows it. Not because Germany is so evil, but because you cannot acknowledge one countries demands and not the others - and Germany simply cannot afford paying back all countries that suffered damages. It would also open up questions about collaborators (e.g. the Italian regime).
Germany is a net-payer in the EU, so every country in the EU is already getting reimbursed by proxy, while generating mutual benefit. This is a pretty good spot to be in and a state worth maintaining IMO.
Can’t wait for in 70 years, when this is finally put to bed and we can move on to demanding reparations for the 2008 debt crisis, should any involved country still exist at that point.
