There are always alternatives. They could call Hamas combat ineffective and declare truece. Tough to do, though as Hamas is still firing rockets on Isreal.

Wiping out Hamas is the current stated goal, not rendering them ineffective. You don’t set a condition you can’t meet if your intention is to stop at some point.

It all depends on your definition of wiping out. I’m sure your not going to get every single one. BTW, Saudi, Jordan and Egypt really want them to wipe them all out. They consider Hamas another Muslim Brotherhood, and don’t give a shit about the Gazians.

Do you suppose Netanyahu will be content with leaving Hamas’ leadership intact?

I think Netanyahu will be content to stay out of jail. He might not get to make that call.

Israel has got, between regular and reserve, about half million troops in the field. It’s GDP isn’t good enough to carry the cost for that for too long. It may be less of a decision than you might think.

It would be, but that will never happen

You sure? Let’s examine domestic politics regarding the war:

Republicans are in favor of the “plain of uninhabited slag” outcome for its own sake.

Progressives want the war to end, preferably quickly.

And centrist Democrats have a few reasons to side with Republicans on this: It doesn’t involve altering the status quo. They get to be seen as bipartisan by doing something Republicans want. And they have a GWB-style “terrorist sympathizer” cudgel to deploy against progressives.

Way I see it, Netanyahu will have us doing whatever he wants until the cudgel stops working at the earliest, since he can count on having both Republicans and centrist Dems in his corner.
