It’s named after the city of Sodom (present day Sedom, Israel) near the Dead Sea. The Israelites falsely believed the rumors of adultery, dishonesty, and uncharitableness. There is no historical evidence of homosexual behavior in the original biblical texts, that was added in the middle ages. Going on, the Israelites hated the Sodomites because they didn’t aid surrounding city states and kept to themselves. The city was heavily damaged in an earthquake due to underground gases, burned and was abandoned. Middle Age Christians rewrote the Book of Ezekiel and used it as an example of their God’s Wrath against what they viewed as immoral sexual behavior as Sodomy.
