Doesn’t this just mean Newsom appoints a replacement to finish her term and then they can get back to confirmation process? I seem to recall that was the reason so many called for her to resign, she was holding things up because she was too ill to sit for the confirmation process.

Yes Newsome will appoint a replacement. Some said that if he did that he is defacto picking the new senator due to incombant advantage, but regardless all senators regardless of age or gender or party should retire of they can’t competently due the job.

It hardly matters, Newsom is a democrat, Feinstein was a democrat, Padilla is a Democrat, California has about as much chance of electing a non-Democrat to her Senate seat as it does of seceding from the union. I have mixed feelings about Newsom but whoever he picks is gonna be pretty similar to whoever was gonna win anyway.

The real question is whether he picks someone that was already running for the seat. Very competitive race between Schiff, Porter, and Lee. If he selected one of those, would give them a huge leg up.

Not a CA voter, but that’s where I’m at. Schiff is fine, but let our whiteboard queen cuck some more assholes with nothing more than a dry-erase marker.

Even if Shiff is ideologically sound, he’s such a dull, dry, wimpy-assed milquetoast snooze pill that he’d get his ass handed to him AGAIN in the Senate

He said a long time ago he’d choose a black woman to take over for Feinstein. Apparently because he didn’t do that when choosing a replacement for Kamala.

Yes I believe Newsom can and will replace her until a special election (or maybe 2024 not sure).

Senator Feinstein was the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee and I’m pretty sure member of several other key committees like Appropriations, Intelligence, and Rules.

Her replacement would likely take over the former Senator’s committee assignments. However, committee assignments can be re-shuffled depending on the new Senator’s seniority, expertise, interests, and needs of the party. Committee leadership positions like Feinstein’s ranking member role on Judiciary are usually determined by overall seniority within the party. So a new Senator would not automatically take over her ranking member spot, though they may request it.

My understanding is that filling the seats in the various committees left vacant by Feinstein’s death requires a vote by the full Senate. Which can be filibustered. Because of course it fucking can.
