Senator Dianne Feinstein's career was filled with firsts, including first woman mayor of San Francisco and one of two of the first women elected to the U.S. Senate from California.
The Confederate flag, which was torn down twice this week by groups who consider it offensive, will not fly again above Civic Center plaza, Mayor Feinstein says. The mayor made her decision yesterday, after Supervisor Doris Ward asked her not to replace the flag. “I want to make it very clear that my decision is based only on Supervisor Ward’s request,” Feinstein said. “I’m not impressed because some group shinnies up a flag pole and tears down a flag.”
Over a decade of the people demanding it be removed, and when Feinstein finally caves, she still had to be a dick about and talk down to people pushing for progress…
She’s been a conservative her whole life, she just didn’t want an R next to her name.
What a bullshit argument, placing that flag infront of a government building is an endorsement of the views the flag represents. The flag belongs only in a textbook with a large disclaimer explaining that it is a symbol of hate and racism. Do you see germany with swastika flags at their capital? No.
They should also fly the swastika in Germany since it’s “part of their history” according to that logic. Italy should wave the fascist flag from Kindom of Italy as well.
San Francisco was never even in the fucking confederacy. What possibly reason is there to fly it (except to use it to gain political points with racists)?
It was part of a historical flag display, showing a progression of 18 different flags flown in the US. I fully understand and agree with the opposition to ever flying a Confederate flag, especially on public grounds, but I do recognize that an exhibit of historical flags is a far different situation from some racist southern guvnah’ insisting on flying it out of pride.
You can have pictures of it or plaques about its history or even a film of the troops carrying it but you DO NOT fly it in any capacity, especially in a government situation.
I’m not disagreeing with that. They asked for context, I gave it. I think it was dumb as hell and disrespectful to fly it, but it still would be intentional blindness to not see that including the Confederate flag in a historical exhibit is different than some asshole proudly flying it because it reflects his shitty beliefs.
No one cares about the narrow pedantic bullshit you’ve built your argument around. Its a racist flag, trying to justify it just makes you a confederacy apologist.
Your response is baseless and is a ridiculous attempt to maliciously slander my character, don’t do that. You claim I’m building an argument in support of flying the Confederate flag or justifying it, I did not and I would not. You clearly are not reading what I wrote or you would have seen that I said I did not agree with flying the flag in my second sentence.
As I’ve already indicated, the person before me asked for the circumstances that this situation occurred and I feel I provided them with more details about the event. Discussion of an event is in no way condoning what took place and it most definitely does not make me a confederate apologist you blathering fuckwit.
Context?

She actually insisted that trump could be a good President.
Her argument is that it’s a part of our history. Removing it and pretending it’s not is whitewashing.
It’s important to remember where we came from to appreciate where we are and understand the mistakes of the past so that we don’t repeat them.
Plus, it sounds like nobody was charged for climbing the pole to cut it down, so let’s just make that a new tradition.

Confederates lost bro
Oh well lets fly some fucking swastikas around since fighting nazis was part of our history too.
Holy fucking shit. And Democrats elected her to fucking Congress
There isn’t any that would make it ok.
Just the same excuse racists always use

No.
No no no no no no no.
There is ZERO excuse to fly it. ZERO.

Exactly.
My first post on Lemmy, instantly downvoted despite being factually correct. Ahhhh… feels like Reddit already. Home sweet home. 🏡👨🏻🌾
