How is this tricking you? If anything it’s tricking Google, but who gives a fuck about Google. This is a business trying to work within a broken system.
Just tippy-tappin’ my way across the internet.

A lot more movies are like 2.5-3 hours these days. An hour movie is exceedingly rare.
Episode pacing is different to movie pacing. More opportunity for story arcs, payoffs, etc than in one 10 hour movie. It’s completely logical that someone should be able to more comfortably sit through and digest 10 episodes versus a 10 hour movie.
Sure, except there’s nothing to suggest that this stuff would reduce the number of real humans being abused.
That quite a stretch. For a start, playing video games isn’t illegal. Generating child porn is. Graduating from something innocent to something criminal is very different to starting off at one of the more heinous crimes in modern society and then continuing to do different variations of that same crime.
I didn’t say image or text generation specifically is what would be society-shattering. There are lots of concerning aspects of these tool, and combined with the pace they’re being developed, its pretty clear that we’re not really prepared for the damage these can cause.
Ah, so you’re just going to ignore how vastly different the rollout of all those technologies was compared to the breakneck pace that generative AI tools are being made available to essentially everyone on earth with almost no oversight? I get that ignoring absolutely all the details makes it seem like my skepticism is unreasonable, but it’s a little dishonest, no?
Does it? Or is it just bonus content for pedophiles? Just because they’re now getting thing B doesn’t mean they’re not also still getting thing A. In fact, there’s nothing to suggest that this wouldn’t just make things worse. What’s to stop them from simply using it like a sandbox to test out shit they’ve been too timid to do themselves in real life? Little allowances like this are actually a pretty common way for people to build up to committing bolder crimes. It’s a textbook pattern for serial killers, what’s to say it wouldn’t serve the same purpose here?
But hey, if it does result in less child abuse material being created, that’s great. But there’s no evidence that this is actually how it will play out. It’s just wishful thinking because people want to give generative AI the benefit of the doubt that it is a net positive for society.
Anyway, rant over. You might be able to tell that I have strong feelings about benefit and dangers of these tools.
You’re definitely exaggerating about how limited an 8GB machine is. Until last year I used an 8GB intel MacBook Pro from 2016 and it handled all sorts of stuff simultaneously. Photoshop, figma, dozens of massive text document and 100+ page pdfs, several browser windows with upwards of 20 tabs each. Was it using swap? Probably, but that’s what it’s there for. The one thing that did bring it to a grinding halt was compiling/running stuff in Xcode, but that’s not exactly the kind of thing that every person needs to be able to do.
I know someone who uses a base M1 Air to record and produce music, do graphic design, and edit 4K video.
These machines are plenty capable. Maybe not for ultra heavy workloads, but for far more than you give them credit for.
And hey, you can always buy more ram if you think you’ll need it. It’s expensive but over the life of the machine it’s worth it. Or just don’t buy a Mac. If it’s really such a deal breaker, buy something that better fits your needs.
But don’t make sweeping statements about how perfectly capable machines are somehow unusable under a workload that wouldn’t have stressed a computer from nearly a decade ago. It’s simply not true.
Full steam ahead on AI bullshit though, no brakes on the freight train of potentially society-shattering fuckery because there could be profits involved.
So you’re just complaining that they’re selling a base machine that’s not specced to your needs?
Oh, and yes, 8gugs is plenty for a lot of people. Obviously not everyone, but for a bigger chunk of the population than most people think.
And? Not everyone uses MS 365.
You might want to tell that to the people who make Parallels.
Why can’t you run Parallels?
So don’t buy the base config? Or get an external drive? Or run a home server? Or use cloud storage?
There are plenty of options out there.
Okay? I don’t get what that has to do with what I said though. I’d love to see the half-the-price-but-just-as-good options today though, I’m not aware of any.

The key part of that is that it’s not enough for your needs. For many people, 8gb is more than enough. It’s not for me, so I didn’t buy that config. It sounds like you just bought the wrong machine and now you’re looking for someone to pin your mistake on.
Not really, but you’re welcome to your opinion I guess.
There are high-schoolers alive today (maybe even in this thread) who were born after Apple stopped charging for updates. Maybe it’s time to get some new jokes.
