As noted in the OP, “use by” and “best before” (etc.) dates are vastly different from each other. “Best before” is very often ad hoc like “a year from the date of manufacture”, but if you’re past a “use by” date on your perishable food, you should approach it skeptically.

Sorry, I should’ve clarified that I meant “unfalsifiable” not in the sense that it’s impossible to evaluate statistically but in the sense that it’s weasel wording, where regardless of the evidence, you can always retreat and declare what you said isn’t false because you never made a specific enough claim compared to what you’re implying.

“Doctors believe vaccines cause autism.” is true in the sense that there are doctors who exist who believe that, even if the overwhelming consensus of the medical community is that the claim is fraudulent nonsense.

Those “last two data points” are two months. For OS X, there’s some upward movement the last two months (about 3%, which isn’t a lot given it spiked late last year from 8.3% to 14.07% to 8.2% in a span of three points), while Linux is practically flatlined with a very light upward incline just the last month.

To the extent StatCounter is useful to begin with, the Linux point is functionally meaningless while the OS X increase of a few percentage points may or may not be significant; trying to divine a trend from twitches in those two points is reading noise. Look at the “unknown” line, meanwhile, and see how it begins mirroring Windows’ decline around mid–late 2025. It rose from 11.2% in September 2025 to 21.5% in June 2026. That represents actual, meaningful, lasting change.

Okay, but StatCounter’s graph clearly shows that “unknown” is what’s cannibalizing most of that – and this is specifically measuring web traffic.

I don’t think particle physicists in 2026 wake up in a cold sweat worried about preons. We are still taking measurements, but I don’t think theoreticians have any reason to invoke it – and IIRC its predictions have been outright contradicted experimentally.
