What’s worse I find is self-checkout’s (at least in the UK) require a member of staff to clear your failed payment. Like, there’s no reason it couldn’t just go back to “Try again”, instead the light goes red, the single person who has already approved your over 18 purchases, your brought your own bag alert, etc. has to come back on their route of 40 self checkouts to check that you have in-fact not got enough money on your card, and then to stand next to you (or worse, bugger off to someone else) for you to try again or use a different card. Argh.

261·3 years agowith focus shifted towards completing the port to GTK3
Is that a typo? I would have thought most software was shifting to GTK4 now?
In the UK we tend not to tip if there’s a service charge.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do any ATMs in Belgium support balance inquiries?
4·3 years agoThat’s unexpected.
I’ve never thought about it before. In the UK getting your balance is on every ATM. The ATMs are all different makes and models, interfaces, OSes, different banks, etc. the only thing I can think of that is the same is they are all connected to LINK - maybe they have set standards for what they should all have/have not?
Anti-feature: you must enter your PIN before it shows you the menu. Does that mean it connects to my bank even in the absense of a transaction?
This is the same in the UK. They request your PIN immediately after putting in your card (althogh I think if you use a credit card it will prompt for your language first), but it doesn’t use it until it needs to connect to your bank (I know this after knowingly mistakenly putting in my PIN, then attempting to get my balance or something and then the card is ejected and the message about incorrect PIN appears).
Really? I don’t see it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_calendar

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How would I start as a database consultant for a niche software?
10·3 years agoDo I just need to start cold calling companies that based on their name “might” have this software as well, and explain my case?
So, as someone who works for an MSP that specializes in a certain vendors products, it’s maybe worth checking out the websites of who may be your competitors. They love to put their clients names on their websites. This should help you at least start building a list of companies to target (LinkedIn is heavily used by sales peoples these days).
I…I don’t think that’s a “now” thing, unfortunately.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do any languages have words for left & right that start with the same letter?
203·3 years agoChinese I think?
- Left - Zuǒbiān
- Right - zhèngquè de
Not sure if that counts, considering it’s using the Latin alphabet and the language is tonal, etc.
EDIT: and Ilocano:
- Left - kannigid
- Right - kusto
EDIT2: and Indonesian:
- Left - kiri
- Right - Kanan
EDIT3: and Irish:
- Left - chlé
- Right - ceart
Going to stop now. I’m literally just choosing languages in google translate.
Is it? Considering Webster ripped through a tonne of spellings it’s not really conservative in that regard. Maybe in pronunciation?

There’s a bit of nuance here. Mad cow disease (BSE) was a big deal, yes, but vCJD (the human form) was not prevalent - as of a few years ago, I think there was less than 200 cases in the UK, and less than 250 cases worldwide - ever. As it can be dormant for decades they believe, it’s why the UK population and visitors at those times is not allowed. Keep in mind, in the UK we do still donate blood - we don’t have to import it from elsewhere. But as it’s such a horrific disease, it’s easier to just say “No one from the UK can donate blood.” it’s not like it would impact other countries blood supplies, and keeps them a bit safer.
