  • Driving behavior analysis, or telematics, as the insurance industry calls it, could be better for consumers, leading to personalized rates that are more fair. Plus, if people have to pay more for their risky driving, they may drive more cautiously, leading to safer roads. But this will happen only if drivers are aware that their behavior is being monitored.

I’m so sick of this shit.

Just like the stop sign cameras, this only increases safety by penalizing and then monetizing minor mistakes that humans make. This is not about safety, it’s about maximizing income through technological micromanaging of drivers who have not caused an accident and were not in danger of causing one.

You’d also have to be a damn fool not to realize that all the data they’re collecting may not apply to their rate structure today, but in the future that rate structure will change, and suddenly a history of driver data you let them gather about you goes from being unremarkable to indicative of a problem.

The shareholders are demanding a blood sacrifice, so rates suddenly go up for people that have a driver score beneath a certain threshold where previously that threshold was higher.

Or some new bullshit study comes out claiming people that listen to podcasts while driving are infinitesimally more likely to cause an accident than people that listen to music, and whoops, Michael Barbaro has been your constant companion on every morning commute for the last 4 years. That’s a pattern of risky behavior.

  • You also shouldn’t keep using software with known vulnerabilities. You can find a maintained fork of Chromium with continued Manifest V2 support or choose another browser like Firefox.

It’s disgusting how this exact idea is used to push users away from things they want, and no matter what they claim, you can’t convince me this isn’t part of how they design certain updates. When the customer has no choice but to update, the company has no reason to make the update appealing. They can actively make it all worse and worse and worse, while continuing to scare users into accepting it.

I’m tired of companies hiding behind “security” to mask anti-consumer shit, and I’m tired of the security community helping them shovel that shit while acting like the consumer is a fool for not wanting to eat it.

  • The only Democrat with the power to do anything at the moment is Biden, and his power is limited.

But he’s been doing a lot within that limited power.

And I genuinely don’t care whatever some asshole from hexbear with their Lemmy World alt is about to pop in here and reply with, because the fundamental issue is not Biden, it is Congress and the Supreme Court. Congress is absolutely fucked, and that is not Biden’s fault, it’s the Constitution’s fault, and the fault of Red State conservatives that have completely gerrymandered their states to hell, and the Supreme Court that did not stop them. It is not biden’s fault at the Supreme Court is now stacked with corrupt conservative justices that will strike down anything he does that they think they can make a case against.

It is very, very convenient to forget that the other two branches exist when you’re intent is to make Biden look like he hasn’t done anything or committed to his campaign promises.

  • I get it’s a joke, but I hear it so much, it makes me question what some of y’all are doing to your cats that this is the go-to joke.

I’ve owned a lot of cats, as have my friends and family. They’re all chill, and most open to affection. It’s very rare to find one of these “Satan” cats. I legitimately can’t keep my cats off me. I almost wish they hated me sometimes because their constant badgering for pets can get a little annoying.

  • For the record, Aaron Swartz never actually went to trial, nor was he “sentenced” to anything.

Federal prosecutors came after him with overzealous charges in an effort to make him accept a plea deal (they do that a lot), which he rejected. It would have gone to court where the feds would have had to justify the charges they were bringing.

But that never happened because he killed himself.

We don’t actually know how this all would have played out.

Look, the kid was a hero, but this is also patently false.

He was not sentenced to 35 years. The trial hadn’t started. 35 years was the maximum possible sentence. He was given a plea deal for 6 months that he rejected.

We don’t need to spin lies to make his story more tragic than it already is.

  • it will not be the fault of the protest voter if Trump is elected. The questions remain: does the Democratic party fear Trump as much as we do?

If you fear him, why would you not assist in preventing his rise?

If you give a shit about Palestine, why would you not support the better candidate for them? You think Trump will do anything to make this situation better?

The logical fallacy at play here is so glaring I can’t believe these journalists are willing to put their name to it.

  • From their Twitter:

If you wonder why we can’t update the VLC on Android version, it’s because Google refuses to let us update:

    • either we give them our private signing keys,
    • or we drop support for Android TV before API-30, and all our users on TV API<30 can’t get fixes.

It’s not much, just dozens of millions of people use Android TV before Android-11…

Maybe we should tell users to buy new TVs? #electronicWaste

I can’t speak to why they’re not updating on FDroid but seeing as how it’s much more difficult to get people to use FDroid on Android TV, I don’t think it will help them with that issue anyway.
