Usually with very low salary one expects other compensation, besides money: but performing arts and other categories allow legal creativity.

This could have used a copy editor to remove many parts and keep the entire plot.
That said, it had really nice world building, had some interesting concepts, kept my interest in many places, and was worth the read.
But I do not want to go through 6+ more books similar to that. The first book was not self contained; it was like episode one of a Netflix series.
I had issues with the story:

I think forcing an Industrial Revolution on a beautiful planet has aged badly.
Also I don’t like the character often spending days and weeks dithering in agonizing indecision. Or not realizing what is going on around him while the story makes it obvious.
