Ah I only used Digg and never heard of reddit till Digg died and never joined most of the big subs. But also reddit was so small back then a small bump is a good kick start. Google trends data correlates with what I saw Digg was more search for in 2008 then by 2011 Digg was dead after the 4.0 debacle in 2010 and reddit took off in 2011.
I was there too i was one of the ones that jumped over. I know its a big internet so maybe we both had different experiences. So maybe you are right and the timing was just a correlation and not causation.
It also took death of a platform “Digg” to jump start its growth.
I don’t know why but when I first saw it I thought it was a row of caskets and the title still worked.
I use the domain for other things it’s not just for this purpose just an added perk.
My favorite thing to do is I have a secondary domain name that is setup with a catch all email address mailbox. So when they ask for a email i just give them nameofstoresux@domain.com and when they say i need a real email address I say it’s real. The look on their face when my phone buzzes with the recept is priceless. Then promptly back hole that address

The point being made is really just the identity of user being tied to User@domain.tld vs @handle it seems like that concept has died with Web 2.0. Only thing I would improve of the fediverse. If communities could be merged with when a group of instances agree to form a network. Like how IRC does it with channels. I mean yeah there would be netsplits from time to time but it would cut down on duplication and increase the traffic of niche communities like the benefits of central platforms get but it’s still distributed.
Exactly I would say the only thing that I find could improve the fediverse would be the adoption of open ID that way we could login to any instance of lemmy or mastodon using our home insurance. But I could be missing an obvious flaw with that.

I sort by new and most posts are not trash as they were on reddit. Things don’t need 50k up votes to be valuable. Lemmy as a platform was the perfect blend of old school forms and reddit. Im just sad it took so long that people forgot how the internet is supposed to work.

This is very much on point I have always seen America as as really having four parties masquerading as two. Progressives , corporate Left , Corporate Right, and zealots and bigots.
The problem is the Corporate Left and corporate Right have been edging Progressives and the zealots and bigots on single issues but never following through as they wouldn’t have anything to campaign on. Trump was too stupid to realize this but when he killed Roe (not to be crass but ) he finely let the zealots and bigots cum and they fell in love.
With Progressives that happened with Obama but he just kept edging us never truly giving what we need other than it could be worse. Instead of single-payer Health we got a Republican idea for healthcare.
Every Progressive will tell you that the electoral system is broken but do we ever get Democrats running on election reform. No because both Corporate Left and Corporate Right don’t want that. The country is divided up like cable companies Charter gets the northern states and Comcast gets the southern states. But they didn’t see musk going over their heads with StarLink fucking up the arrangement.
