Good point, I didn’t get into reddit that early but it definitely rings familiar

Oh I don’t think it’s all techies, but they definitely make up a good chunk of the userbase. Hard agree on it feeling more chill too, I’d been kinda afraid to comment anything on reddit before I left.
I know it’s arguably part of why it’s intimidating to your average newcomer but I adore that it’s mostly nerdy techies lol. I’m so used to dropping something vaguely technical and being met with the online equivalent of blank stares so people being willing and able to engage with that sort of thing is super nice!
It says a lot that when I read that my first thought was “oh so like keeping the self hosted services running and whatnot” for a second 😅
Gotcha, that’s totally fair. Thanks for elaborating!
FWIW Proton does offer a mail only plan that’s $5/month, 4 if you go for yearly
Oof that’s scary. Good thing I have a decent enough return window to at least make sure stuff like that isn’t the case, at least.
Wow, I legit just ordered a used pixel yesterday to give graphene a try lol. Uncanny timing!
Anyhow, that’s great news! I can really see the EU sinking its teeth into this if nothing else.
The only way I see myself ever giving it another go is if I manage to get into my NixOS setup for easy replication or something, too much manual tweaking otherwise.
The compromise I arrived at after I migrated to Linux was booting windows off a VHD file on a USB SSD when I really need it. That way I get a portable, fully performant install without it wasting any disk space or messing with my partitions.
I’m no expert but I see no obvious red flags there, should be good to go!
My first idea was to buy one PC with two GPUs with passthrough of GPU and USB input (sitting anyway close), but I got the impression, that is at this moment more something to tinker, then to run “in production”.
I’m under the same impression, I check it every few months but it looks clunky and not worth the trouble. Not something I’d like to rely on right now, that’s for sure.
Based ngl
I’ve been using it for several months by now, I keep everything synced with Syncthing and it’s been working really well. Android app is still rough around the edges but it does work alright.
My understanding is it was developed as an answer to Roam Research specifically, and while its model might not work for everyone, I love it.
I’ve been using Hetzner with borg for a while now and it’s been super solid, can’t be beaten price wise either as far as I’ve looked
Imo it’s decent at what it set out to be: user friendly, painless realtime chatting, with some voice/video calling to top it up. That said, they keep adding questionable bloat to try and upsell Nitro subs so honestly I can only see it worsening as time goes on.
Heck, even with a handful of people anything longer form feels like a chore. I’ve been the admin of a tiny friends only server for a good few years and even in there it feels hard to keep track sometimes when there’s more than a single laser focused topic.
Yeah, it really bugs me that it’s basically absorbed what used to be public forums and whatnot into its own proprietary bubble where search engines don’t reach while not even being a good fit for that kind of thing to begin with
To be fair, that’s a bloody rad dream! Love the concept lol
Good points overall! I’d add that in my opinion “estaremos enviando” is closer to “we will be sending”, which also better conveys the odd, misplaced telemarketer politeness vibes it carries.
I was going to say lol, I’d struggle to find anyone who is even aware of it in real life
Maybe consider a Hetzner storage box. They support borg, restic, rsync and probably more, there’s no ingress or egress fees and you get unlimited traffic. Very nice for off-site backups if, like myself, you’re on a limited budget.
