NEET - not in employment, education or training. So no one else has to figure out what the acronym of the day is.

It’s a pretty old term. It’s been kicking around the Japanese culture scene for years, maybe even decades. Or that might just be exposing my bias, as that’s how I encountered it.

Just say unemployed or jobless. No need to get technical in the headline

It feels weird to defend a buzzword but…

It’s more specific and inclusive than either of those words and is clearly the product of a larger societal conversation, meaning it indicates a problem worth considering that shouldn’t be oversimplified just to avoid burdening readers with a new term.

It drives me nuts that businesses are unwilling to invest in the next generation of workers. There is a serious lack of traing and mentorship. Then, without an ounce of irony, management will complain about the quality of cost of candidates.

they got lazy, and dont want to spend any money doing mentorships, or whatever to jumpstart someones career. hence alot of people in stems dont go further than thier degree, because theres no experience you can even get outside of a school. they dont ahve the advantages of programmers/software who can get experience,c ertifications outside of school(you have to be undergrad to work in a lab that already very limited space, and its usually full), also dont expect getting a masters will help too.

It’s a real shame. There are tons of motivated, talented people entering the workforce who would be great with a little professional training and support. Boeing had a pilot program a while back where they did intense training with new hires early in their career. That program produced really great team members - any of whom I’d fight to have on my team. I hope others start similar programs.

its probably selective, if boeing as a program, probably need said experience, or significant academic achievments, including grades. Also if you been to a CC that have “ivy league level”(they gave a reason why they had these classes) classes your gpa will suffer, as many people arnt expected that level of difficulty to a pre-universitiy college.

That is particular program was funded by the US government with requirements to hire former military and disadvantaged people. These were people who would have otherwise slipped through the cracks.

Businesses aren’t investing in the future generations for the same reasons that any politician capable of doing anything meaningful has fucked off into retirement. No point in spending your last minutes on the Titanic doing repairs. The greedy and powerful are smashing and grabbing and burning though human resources like it’s the end of the world, because it is. And the rest of us are smoking em if we got em.

It’s only the end of the world when people give up. There’s plenty left to do, at least if you’re willing to make the effort.

same thing they wont do anything for low birth rates, its just half-assed attempt, or using culture wars, or actual wars a distraction. Also the reason they dont want to fund schools most of the time, and this not only in red areas, blue areas are underfunded. if teachers are getting such a low-starting salaries in thier contracts, the districts underfunded. (i met a former co-worker that confirmed this as a teacher she refused to work in a dangerous district and also because the pay was so low.) this was a blue area.

I’d honestly suggest you consider doing it any way. Like this post is saying there are lots of kids who are languishing and would take even a volatile position as it is experience. If you’re open and honest with how insecure the position is, I believe you’ll find people who will meet you where you are.

That’s assuming you have the bandwidth and temperment to mentor.

Not even necessarily for the altruism of fostering the next generation, as it’d be mutually beneficial. You said you were feeling pressure from the amount of work you have. I was more trying to get you out of your own way, as it sounded like you were hung up on providing an old-school job package (salary and pension included), and that’d just be more stress.

The way times are you have to take care of yourself before you can effectively take care of someone else. You finding a way to provide even part-time employment to ease your own workload is just getting two birds with one stone.

Also, anyone else have to look up what a “NEET” is?

betting all of it one industry, like CS isnt useful, when was an ongoing problem for the industry for like 10+years. alot of them went for cs, and then theres the influencer crowd. besides this industries other are suffering the same fate.

reality, is many employers dont want to train people freshout of school(college) so they always demand(catch-22) experience right off the bat. 0-4 years in relevant experience, lab or research. only a very small subset at my state school even were lucky to get into “volunteering” at a lab, or some relevant experience in thier field. additionally, job sites have made it harder as well, and many of them shut down thier own forum boards to prevent getting harassed by said companies: because the job forums are making them look bad.

kinda sad to see people in CC staying there 5,10,15+years with no directions.

yea, but it got worst i think, especially when job sites started to appear online. while it was easier to find jobs online, its harder to apply, because yor competing against more people at once. maybe for a service industry job that doesnt require any fancy degrees, but degreed jobs, forget it.
