    They can’t increase the work day so they pressure you to do more in the same time. More profit for them, more stress for you.

    Y’all should employ my “Hawkeye Pierce Theory of Work”. You bust your ass right off the bat, get really good and knowledgeable, get recognized as such. At worst, you get a lateral promotion doing something you would rather be doing, or gain the juice to do what you want to do and leave the lazy people to do the crappy parts of the job. In any case, they dare not get rid of you.

    If that doesn’t work you a) are not the top employee you think you are or b) need to get another job. I turned down a job that’s considered pretty good around here by our biggest employer. They made it damned clear I wasn’t going anywhere or doing anything else for at least a year. Nope.

      This is how I work too tbh. Yes, you get more work, but then if it really becomes too much, they will just assign others to help you out (at least, that’s how it always went with me) and then you start delegating. You drill them, they become good, you delegate more. That frees up time for you to actually improve and automate stuff, freeing up more time for the delegates, allowing you to focus even more on making their and your life easier.

      I’m in IT, so this might not work in every job type, but I’ve done this in every position I was in and it always worked so far.

        I can’t even imagine this actually happening, even at the better companies I’ve worked at. Closest I’ve seen is when someone is so overloaded that they quit, then management decides to hire two people to replace them so they can “catch up”.

          Maybe it’s a cultural thing? I’ve only ever worked for Belgian and Dutch companies (and one Austrian one, but that was a project of only a couple of months).

          All those companies were meritocratic and had an active agenda of nurturing talent.

    Punished for success. It makes you realize that you need to set boundaries. Work will punish you for being a good employee, but that only lets you know how valuable you are — at this job or the next.

    Drawing that line of responsibility and pay is a constant learning process. Saying no, not letting your ego drive you.

      ALWAYS keep a copy of your job description handy

      those 5% other duties and responsibilities should never be more then a few minutes a week and a couple hours a pay period

      if they ever want to change your job description, you should get a raise out of it or you should use that as a indicator that your about to get fucked

    exactly what I don’t get with capitalism. Why should I work faster and harder if my salary doesn’t go up faster and I get more tasks?

      They want you to work in advance and for you to ask them later with thorough explanation for justifying a raise. They’ll decide later (end of the year) performance review or salary review.

      I applied for an extra role at work last year. They were reluctant to give it to me “because I hadn’t already been doing it” (for free)…shows that I’m not keen. Why the hell would I have done this before when I had no time or resource for it? They didn’t have any other applicants so they gave it to me anyway…but WTF

        Happened to me more often than I can count. Always the same outcome: I work my normal speed, work gets done insanely fast, employers denies raise and points at me doing thigs for free, I stop working as far as I can legally get away with, employer needs to hire more people for the job I did before, I sabotage as much as I can, then leave.

        In very rare occasions I got a little bit of extra money out of it but mostly i just learned a lot and switched jobs. went self employed later and did away with that shit.

        but the system is a pile of shit, no matter your skills.
