Anti-abortion access was never about improving the welfare of children. Historically, the laws we have to protect children (food provisions like Food Stamps / SNAP, medical care, child labor regulations, etc.) occurred only after we had animal protection laws, and someone noticed animals have more rights than kids do.

Education was a result of kids out of work engaging in too much mischief. The point was containment first, and the whole let’s teach them some basics thing came later.

And no-one wants to know the hazards that Victoria-era street urchins had to face. It’s better to imagine the Devil’s Dandy Dogs / The Hounds of Tindalos consumed those children who failed to dodge artfully.

Today, the juvenile court system in the US remains a nightmare, where kids are warm bodies to fuel prison rackets. Children are not guaranteed Constitutional rights, nor the Miranda rights. They often do not get due process, and minors often suffer dearly for breaking laws that do not apply to majority citizens (adults). Woe to the black kid or adolescent that crosses path with police.

One day the society built on the ashes of the US will actually take interest in the welfare and safety of children. But probably not in my lifetime.

(When I played The Sims 2 a family had guests over, and the baby was on the floor (a distracted sim will put a baby on the floor on occasion), and one of the non-friend guests picked her up, fed her and changed her diaper. And I had to pause and cry that I don’t live in that society. Said guest then fell into the hold youngster abyss which in The Sims 2 is the substitute for crack cocaine.)
