WASHINGTON, July 30 (Reuters) - The United States is suspending a “de minimis” exemption that allowed low-value commercial shipments to be shipped to the United States without facing tariffs, the White House said on Wednesday.
Under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, packages valued at or under $800 sent to the U.S. outside of the international postal network will now face “all applicable duties” starting on August 29, the White House said.
That doesn’t change the fact that people are going to order less, if only because they can afford less
Technically correct, but not to any point where it will have the intended consequence.
The vast majority of people will silently pay $18 instead of $12 for a shitty tiktok item because it’s not available locally. It’s primarily a tax on the masses, not some altruistic way to push manufacturing to the US.
Only as long as they can put it on debt. But the “vast majority” of Americans already can’t afford to buy the $12 thing, let alone the $18 one. At some point it’s not that they’ll choose to not buy more expensive stuff, it’s that they won’t have the ability. At which point, people will just buy less stuff.
The shitty tictok items costing more is just flat out good. That kind of waste needs to be eliminated anyways.
