I have a theory that part of this game’s enormous success is due to it being to run on most computers without special requirements. People are tired of needing a more and more expensive gpu to play stuff that isn’t that great, and seeing your hardware become obsolete at record rates. Also, the game costing a lower price than average, for the same reasons.
Considering it crashed multiple digital storefronts the minute it launched, had hundreds of thousands of players on Steam within an hour, and had been one of the most hyped game launches in years I think it’s safe to say this wasn’t a huge factor. Not that it doesn’t help.
And the $20 price tag is in the same boat, I know plenty of people (myself included) who would’ve paid double without hesitation considering the good will Team Cherry has earned from their first game.
Maybe a bit mundane but I think the reason the game is an enormous success is because it’s a sequel to one of the best games of the last decade. That and the developers were able to pour their passion into it instead of having to force it out before it was finished with a bunch of predatory monetization garbage.
This was a meme going around earlier this month about AAA vs Indie gamedevs:
Game = money maker
vs.
Game = passion project
This would also go for games like Stardew Valley and Terraria, which have been cheap and kept receiving updates for years.
that’s the same for like every 2d indie game?
Sadly not no. Lots of indie devs dont give a fuck about optimization so their games are insanely power hungry for no reason. Deep Rock Galactic Survivors for example is a 2D game that will make even mid to high end gpus spin up their fans a bunch.
I’ve been working through Cassette Beasts and it does NOT like lower-end hardware despite being pretty light on graphics.
cough (cronos) cough
2d?
imagine selling at a lower price and getting more sales… enough to cripple the stores… that would be unbelievable right?
Where’s the yellow paint? This is fucking unplayable!
Silksong if it was made by Lies of P devs
Huh?? No map, minimal overlay, people told you where to go, wdym? Or did I fall for ragebait?
fast travel menu shows where to go to continue quest, and sometimes what reward you will get. Gemini is always on your back “helping” (backseating, spoiling and breaking ilthe immersion)
I was kind of thankful for the game telling me where I had to give items to, sometimes I forgot there even was a quest. If it happened within the same level (quest start and item obtained) then it was kind of unnecessary, I agree. Also agree on Gemini. Didn’t help that they made his voice like a shonen anime character.
