I mean, I don’t find it that hard to believe that a multi-billion dollar for profit automaker wasn’t actually that upset about their workers being manhandled and is willing to pay protection money to an authoritarian stooge. Idk about Hyundai specifically, but companies like them used sweatshops in countries under dictatorships before and did business in pretty much this same way.

Exactly. All they had to do was make the correct noises to appease the people back home and then it’s right back to business.
