Hello World!
First off, better late than never: Happy Halloween!
Sorry we’ve been a bit quiet lately. But we love you, promises given! We’re just working on a lot of things, and most of us are very busy with their daily lives lately. We’ll be back with you to announce some of our projects tomorrow. <3
Lately, and gladly, here’s a grand thanks to @canthidium@lemmy.world for giving us an amazing Halloween icon!
Things have been working fine for me, so well done and take whatever time things take.
I’ll second this. I’ve been engaging with lots of people and it feels like a real community here.
I rarely contribute and the few interactions Ive had on Lemmy have been leagues better than anything on Reddit (or most other social media).
I find most people are here because they want the connection, not to earn internet clout. That seems to push people towards discussion, instead of the white noise I see elsewhere.
Same here. I rarely contribute but have felt more inclined to do so here because when I do I usually get a response from someone that’s actually wanting to contribute to the conversation. Everyone has been super respectful even with controversial topics. On most other platforms I would be lucky for anyone to even read my comment let alone take the time to reply or engage by voting. For us old ass millennials it feels like the old days of the internet back when everyone had a blog or a Tumblr for people to follow, ya know back before Tumblr became whatever the hell it is now lol.
I just want to hug you all. Happy whichever holiday you’re celebrating right now. Loving all of you.
Lemmy is still really niche, but we’re growing every week and with every update. even if they’re a bit slow sometimes, its worth it
Slowly but surely. Reddit has had 18 years to build a base of 500 million.
Man it feels good to have no ads. Thanks Fediverse. Happy Halloween.
Seriously reddit can be the worst in that regard especially since you can’t even block sponsored content in favor for different sponsored content
They make the ads look as much like postings as possible too
That intensely annoys me. My brain tries to understand the content for a good 3 seconds until I realise “oh wait this isn’t a meme, it’s an ad”
The ones that say “megathread”, but comments are turned off!
Aww, thanks so much for the shout out! And thank you for the love in the comments. I hope to make many more themed icons in the future. Keep a lookout!
Great job @canthidium@lemmy.world, thank you 🫶
Thank you!!
I still have no idea how this works
How what works and how can we help?
is there a picture on what Federation does?
like how does my post on lemmy.world go to lemmy.ml
This is a great infographic!
I forgot about Beehaw. I guess they chose to stay defederated from Lemmy.world?
Yes, there is on wikipedia here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse#/media/File:Fediverse_branches_1.2.png
But the Fediverse is bigger than what you are asking on the lemmy.world and lemmy.ml. The Fediverse is an umbrella for all of the different types of social media that are connected sometimes loosely and sometimes directly. The picture I just linked above shows all those different types. For example, Mastodon is like Twitter, Lemmy is like Reddit and Peertube is like youtube. When I say they’re like the other social media, I mean that. They’re not the same but loosely similar.
how does lemmy.world go to lemmy.ml
lemmy.world and lemmy.ml are different instances (aka, servers hosted by someone). This means that Ruud, the head admin of lemmy.world has all the servers for lemmy.world and someone else has all of the servers for lemmy.ml. Since they’re both federated and a lemmy type (meaning forum), they copy all of the posts from each other onto their own servers. There are different rules for that and that’s getting more into the weeds and I’m not sure, but that’s the basics.
Again, there are different rules for a Mastodon type or a Peertube type on how they communicate with a Lemmy type. Just keep that in mind. I hope that helps but feel free to ask more questions.
You could read a long explanation, if you’d like, but the email analogy also somewhat works.
In the same way you can email someone with another email address, you can write messages on a community on another instance. They “federate” posts together.
IMO, unless you care about federation, which the average person doesn’t, that’s all you really need to know.
There is no magic, the servers just send it to each other.
So you send your post to LW, they store it and show it on their website. But they also send it to all the other Fediverse servers they are connected to (aka “federated with”), so those can also show it to their users. The same thing happens when a post is updated or deleted, or when new votes come in. The servers just send each other messages about what changed, so they can all act accordingly.
Okay let me try to explain my confusion:
I understand subreddits, and I understand servers. I know lemmy is like multiple different servers with multiple different subreddits in each server.
What I don’t understand.
What server am I in? And how does that impact my ability to interact with other servers? Should I even care about what server I’m in? Are there things currently hidden from me on Lemmy depending on which server I originally selected?
What server am I in?
You are hosted by reddthat.com. When you signed up for that account, you signed up to be on that server and follow their rules.
And how does that impact my ability to interact with other servers?
Specifically for Lemmy types (not Mastodon, not Peertube, etc.), it impacts what you see on your front page. Reddthat decides what that is. It also impacts if certain other instances can interact with you depending on what your admins and the other admins have decided. For instance, my account is hosted on Lemmy.World but Beehaw defederated (made it so they don’t receive any updates of comments or posts) from Lemmy.world when Reddit shit the bed, so they wouldn’t have an influx. We and they don’t see each other’s stuff. Lemmy.world has defederated from explodingheads and a few others because of attacks on lemmy.world users, they weren’t playing nice. So we don’t see any of their stuff and they don’t see ours.
Should I even care about what server I’m in?
Yes, it’s kind of like a neighborhood. The good ones keep the trolls out and show what you want on your front page. Some people like bad neighborhoods, so if you like one of those, seek that out. If you seek a bad neighborhood, most people won’t be able to see or interact with you though.
Are there things currently hidden from me on Lemmy depending on which server I originally selected?
Yes, as I said before, some instances have defederated from each other, so that will impact what you see. Think of it as some people have made their instance (subreddit) private and you have to meet certain criteria to get in.
Feel free to ask more questions. If I can’t answer, someone else probably will.
Is there a way to navigate lemmy that will show me everything?
Appreciate the straight forward answers.
Is there a way to navigate lemmy that will show me everything?
Sort of, on the liftoff mobile app, you can. There are probably other apps as well. You have to sign up for all of those instances that cover what you want to see though, then input them into the app. The app can get fussy when you do this, but it lets you see everything and you can easily switch to instance you want to post from.
If you mean every instance, then not that I’m aware of. Someone might know of a developer that lets you at least see every instance. I doubt there is one that you can comment and post on every one.
Hey, if I can figure out how Lemmy works, you definitely can too!
Whoa! If Barbie is on Lemmy, I think we’re doing all right.
I upvoted you because of your glowing statement.
I’ll just leave this here. Explanation of Lemmy and Fediverse principles in lay-person’s language.
Salute!
Proper icon mate looks bloody fab
I love the Halloween lemmy. I also subscribed to the lemmy dev patreon today. Glad to support the project and seems like a better use of funds than running my own instance.
Last year I bought 3 bags of candy and ran out crazy fast. We had almost 300 kids come by. Gonna be setting up some tables soon and moving outside. No costumed halloweener left behind.
Happy belated Halloween everyone. Nothing but love for the Lemmy commuinty.
Much love and Happy Halloween everyone!
Mood: Spooky 🎃
You guys all kick ass. Thanks for making such a great community.
The more I look at the icon, the more confused I am by it. Is it a pumpkin head, or a pumpkin mask? The ears are sticking through and there’s a cut out for the nose so I’m guessing mask, but then what the hell happened to its eye? Does the mask turn half your face evil, or did some asshole jab him in the eye?
Or…is it implied he’s like a Frankenstein’s monster under there, cause of the green ears?
lol, so it started as a pumpkin head/jack o lantern, but as I was tweaking things here and there, I wasn’t liking it so I kept going back to a very simple design of the orange pumpkin head with green “stem” ears. Then someone suggested making the eyes red and white and it just looked right, so here we are, haha. Sometimes graphic design is just an accident.
😵
Love the icon!!
I just joined Lemmy, looking forward to wasting a lot of time here!
welcome fob lemming.
Great work, team. Happy Halloween! 👻
