Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were canvassing near the location of the shooting at about 3:38 p.m. when they “encountered and detained” Eaton, Burlington officials said.
edit:
Having BATFE agents canvas seems a little fishy to me unusual.
Yeah because DUIs happen on public roads so it would go to DOT before it would go to ATF, now if that person was transporting illegal alcohol then ATF would probably get involved.
Police detectives, county personnel and federal agents spent Sunday canvassing the neighborhood near the shooting and conducting interviews with neighbors, authorities said. The FBI helped with “victim services and computer and cellphone analysis,” officials said.

Seems like they involved several agencies to canvas the area. Likely used whatever field offices were nearby. BAFTA just happened on the perp while doing so.
Historically, having several law enforcement organizations come together to work on something is not a task that is accomplished very quickly or easily.

DUIs involve alcohol, but you don’t call the ATF if you suspect someone of drinking and driving.
You might if a hate crime that could spark national outrage is involved.
Apparently. I should have said unusual instead of fishy. I wonder if this guy wasn’t already being watched by the feds or something.
I mean…no?
That’s what the FBI is for.

That’s not what BATFE does. I think they would be more into the gun running side of things. (“Doing or stopping?” Why, yes!)
Why?
Canvassing is grunt work. The FBI and BATFE are specialized law enforcement agencies.

Well, for one, we aren’t in “historical” times.
For two, who says? I bet you can find thousands of instances of orgs in the past launching a rescue/manhunt quickly.
Thanks for explaining.
That’s my perception. I’m told that I’m wrong a lot but I’m not going to learn anything by sitting here and not saying anything.
Seems like not the normal thing they handle?
