I recently posted to patientgamers@lemmy.ml and cross-posted to patientgamers@sh.itjust.works regarding my newb difficulties with Diablo 1 and both of these communities had awesome people willing to help out and offer any advice they could give.

Original Post

As it stands, I have conquered Diablo 1. My solo Warrior class playthrough was — in the end — a resounding success. I bent the Lord of Terror over my knee, spanked his ass with my Bastard Sword, and smote his ruin upon the basement of Hell; thus fulfilling a long overdue, 26-year-old personal bucket list item.

I know the game has a ton a replay value and I’m sure I’ll revisit it again in the future, but for now, I can’t wait to begin Diablo 2!

Thanks again!

I am so jealous of you getting to play Diablo 2 for the first time. Savor it don’t rush you will never get that feeling back. Do you plan on doing the original on a CRT or resurrection?

I think I’ll go with Resurrection since I really enjoy playing old games with tweaks, mods, or enhanced editions that bring updated resolutions, textures, and/or modern features that somehow went overlooked in a given game’s heyday. Although, playing original D2 on a CRT would be cool.

I also recently learned about Project Diablo 2; an expansive mod for original D2 with online multiplayer, so maybe I’ll get into that community someday. Unfortunately, the Resurrected license doesn’t work for it. You need an original licensed copy of D2 for that.

No mods are required to play D2-LoD multiplayer.

If you decide against resurrection and go for the original, I would suggest to also get the Lord of Destruction expansion right away. It not only includes two additional character classes, additional monster classes and weapons but also allows you to play on higher resolution

Project Diablo 2 is a pretty vanilla version of Diablo 2 LoD. Yes, it rebalances.skills and items, and adds corruptions and endgame maps, but there’s no new skills. For a complete overhaul, you want MedianXL.

That said, I’d still forego both and go with D2R. Modding is coming along, finally. After a regular playthrough or eighteen (6 classes × 3 difficulties), give Diablo 2 ReModded a try.

Imagine being so patient you were just now cracking d1 open. That was your “new game”.

That person would be our god

If you have the opportunity to play through D2 with a friend I highly recommend it.
