Look at Amazon and their Fire TV platform. It’s just android, with all of the Google stuff stripped out.

Sure, Google may not be getting any money for that, but they are getting more dev time and attention on the open source parts of Android which helps to solidify the base of the OS which helps them.

And Android got popular because it was open and manufacturers could build phones that support it without necessarily needing to involve Google (or at least without needing to certify it or meet strict standards) which let the platform grow significantly. If Google closed it up today it would likely cause a fork in the Android platform ecosystem and you’d end up with “Google Android” on pixel and “Open Android” on all others.

Yeah that’s the bit that bothers me more. If it were just his personal devices then meh, but I’m sure our officials don’t keep a clean separation there.

Edit: the more I learn about this man the more I dislike him. Wow, it just keeps getting worse.

For a while my network switches were pilfered from the tech recycle bin at work. And oh so many laptop power cables (the Surface ones) so now I have one at every seat in my house.

Not so much stolen, but I was… unofficially gifted…a high performance SSD that had been sitting unused at the office for a few years. No one claimed it so I was told to take it.

And then the usual stack of notebooks, reams of paper, pens, and pencils from the office supply.

My home first aid kit is pretty well stocked too, totally unrelated to the individually packaged piles of pills at work of course.

Yeah honestly this doesn’t bother me (caveat that I literally just heard of this today and have zero context). It’s funny and awkward and embarrassing but it doesn’t bother me at all. I have enough other reasons to not like the guy and this doesn’t make the list.

Editing to add: okay the tool he is using to do this is weird and I’m worried that it might be running over secret government content. That parts not okay.

I think it’s more that you can play the game with low res textures while all the high red ones download.

That and I’m sure they order the download so level 1’s textures download first too so you’ll probably not end up reaching the areas being downloaded until they’re available.

This feels most likely to me too, though maybe even for an Edu or “managed” Windows install of some kind where you get more support and more opinionated stable installs or something. Sort of like Windows S mode but maybe with more help.

Technically I run OpenHAB not HA, but I’ve struggled with this too.

I’ve been wanting to dockerize my Openhab for a while but have found similar issues with compatibility and network discoverability so I’ve avoided it. My current setup is their official Raspberry Pi os (openhabian), with a Conbee II via Zigbee2mqtt for zigbee with Hue, Tradfri and Sonoff devices an Aeotec Zstick Gen5 (no plus) for Zwave with mostly Zooz devices, way too many WiFi devices (mostly TPLink Kasa) and probably some other things I’ve forgotten.

To be honest though I haven’t fully nailed reliability. It works for months straight with no issues but every so often I get a bug that requires resetting a device or two, or an update stomping over my SSL certs, or some intermittent slowness, but it’s reliable enough. I specifically avoid any cameras or security devices (beyond some door sensors for non-security reasons) so that I don’t have the headache of high reliability.

The whole setup is a patchwork of whatever happened to work at the time and wasn’t prohibitively expensive for me. I decided a long time ago that the flexibility was worth more than paying a bunch more for a single highly reliable system.

It sucks, but it works better than manually switching on my lights all the time, so it’s good enough for me.

Also why bother releasing a plain old APK when someone can use apkmirror to grab it manually. Though at least adding an APK is relatively easy.

And if you are releasing the app manually you need some handling for updates (or informing users to install an update on their own). At least in Google Play users tend to stay relatively up to date. Otherwise any time someone reaches out about an issue you’ll be more likely to find them on older versions, wasting a bit of your time.

Do similar things with a similar meaning, don’t just do what they do. They might like buying small gifts, but receiving small gifts might make them feel guilty.

“Sir or ma’am I assure you it’s safe to send me your banking information. It’s over Signal, so it’s secure. I promise no one can steal it because its encrypted. That’s why we’re not using emails, emails are not secure. We need this information immediately, do not delay.”

Google lists the sites you use single sign on for, but it doesn’t keep track of how many sites list your Gmail account as your recovery email, or the sites where you had to create an account that uses your email as your username.

If you’re lucky all those accounts aren’t important, but there’s always a chance you’ll forget one that matters and if youve canceled your Gmail account you’d be screwed if you need to recover that random account.

So you’re basically stuck keeping Gmail alive for a few years even after you’ve stopped using it just in case you forgot some accounts.

That’s a great solution but still takes a bit to switch to initially. I’m just talking about the switchover, after that using an alias service or having your email on your own domain helps save a lot of pain later.

The main trouble is the same with switching any email service really.

1. You need to update your email everywhere…everywhere… this usually means keeping the old email account alive perpetually just in case you find some old account you didn’t (or can’t) update.

2. You need to back up all your old emails. This is usually easy on things like Outlook or Thunderbird or anything similar.

That’s what sold it for me.

I don’t mind if reddit wants to make some money on their API, but giving app developers barely a month to respond, having insanely high prices, throwing away the relationships they built with app devs, and not responding to community feedback around the issue at all was all too much.

Necessary evil more than anything, but it does at least allow the valet to double/triple park and get more parking in a smaller area (at the cost of longer retrieval times at the end of the night), so at least it helps make parking space denser.

But would this policy actually prevent that? A vandal in a community of 100 people would only be charged 1% of the repair fees (assuming they aren’t caught), seems like a meaningless disincentive for them.

And forcing community members to self-police or be charged fees is asking for trouble.

It’s also part of the reason why maintenance budgets exist. The condo board/government/etc should be responsible for factoring in the risk of vandalism repairs into their budget and spreading that cost over time. That’s why they exist.

At the end of the day it’s my dues/taxes that pay it either way, but I shouldn’t get stuck with a surprise assessment unless it’s a major unexpected repair.

Teaching them our sense for justice worries me. Either they understand we can police ourselves or they start holding us accountable for wrongdoings under their legal system with no warning, assuming we’ll understand.
