  • We have several big clusters built on mixed virtual and bare metal. I would prefer our system engineer to manually build on virtualbox before even touching hyper-v (which we clearly don’t!). For some political reasons our IT forced us to test to build a solution on hyper-v (cost saving on some non critical infrastructure proposed by some very non-tecnical people), I still have nightmares. I am not even the person who had to do it in practice.

It is long to explain it here, just give it a try. Windows server and all releted solutions are simply bad for real workloads. Who use it on server is just a company who doesn’t need to be productive on the IT side. Their core business is not tech related and they don’t care other than getting cheap sys admins

  • On the other hand, they must think VMware portfolio is a rather stable set of solutions, while the bulk of innovation is moving towards kubernetes like solutions that they don’t want to follow, as they are late and don’t want to invest to build the know how.

They are considering to transform the business model more like oracle, sap, cisco, where the core business is sales not innovation. Their plan is probably that they have such a strong position in the market that talents are not needed, just average people who can patch out stuff somehow.

I have too much technical experience to agree with them that this is a good call. I believe it will be a disaster on the long run. But their background is clearly different, and they saw on the market a huge amount of successful companies with such business model. First among all pre-nadella Microsoft.

  • I do workshops and professional courses only nowadays without any final test. I cannot stand the whole exams, assignments thing anymore. I did too much of them and I am old enough that I am a peer to professors. And I used to teach at university…

I like to learn, I don’t have time to waste in all the evaluation/marking BS.

  • The technology for human intelligence? Any technology would be always very different from human intelligence. What you probably are referring to is AGI, that is defined as artificial general intelligence, which is an “intelligent” agent that doesn’t excel in anything, but is able to handle a huge variety of scenarios and tasks, such as humans.

LLM are specialized models to generate fluent text, but very different from autocompletes because can work with concepts, semantics and (pretty surprisingly) with rather complex logic.

As oversimplification even humans are fancy autocomplete. They are just different, as LLMs are different.

    Thanks. I read on Wikipedia:

Parmo was created by Nicos Harris, a Greek American navy chef. He was wounded off the coast of France, and brought to the United Kingdom to be treated at what is now James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.

It makes sense, greek food is very good :D

  • I won’t read the article with such a stupid title.

In other situations they call it victim shaming. There is a reason laws exists to forbid gambling for minors. Many video games are built as loopholes to circumvent such laws. Publishers and producers must be punished for this. Parenting is not a relevant topic here, as we are talking about society.

In a society the distribution of parenting capabilities has large variability, and it does not always depends on the parents themselves, but also on environmental factors (such as work-related stressors).

As society we need to fight any predatory business model that exploits society and individuals weaknesses.
