  • the most insulting part of this is ‘people’ suddenly pretending like we love and always loved the office, when it’s been a fundamental symbol of stagnation and boredom and misery in culture ever since they became widespread. NO ONE would voluntary want to spend 5 days in a shitty building after a commute wearing clothes they don’t want to with bosses sniffing around their necks all day leaving maybe 4 hrs a day to yourself in your home. ‘top talent’ or not, everyone deserves to be able to work where they feel most comfortable.

  • RTO itself is poor management. it’s 2024, what the fuck are you doing. office work isn’t some peak utopian concept, it’s only really been a thing for around a century, and it’s grown increasingly miserable as productivity skyrockets while wages don’t. any honest person hates it, and it is objectively archaic now that we have the internet

yeah, zoom meetings do suck, talking is more awkward, collaboration is harder, vibes are harder to maintain. but in no universe should that take precedent over the massive quality of life improvements WFH offers for the worker. internal work dynamics mean fuck all versus not having to leave your home/family/pets for 8+ hours every day

  • this is a great post, thank you.

We may never find out. If mollusks do experience emotions, there’s a chance their emotions are nothing like ours. We explain emotional responses through happiness, fear, anger and all that stuff, but who says other animals feel the same? Perhaps sea creatures have an emotional spectrum comprised of degrencre, humber, nage, and dorcelessness, but we’ll never be able to understand those, let alone recognise them when animals express them.

this is exactly what i mean – isn’t it just so much more interesting and hopeful and meaningful to think about it this way than immediately drawing the line and saying shit like “we cannot just run around and play pretend because it makes us feel cozy.” or “To suggest that a mollusc has an ‘inner life’ is unscientific and goes against our current understanding of living organisms.”

we’ve developed this consensus at 2023 AD after thousands and thousands of years of complex evolution – clearly we are at the zenith! we have no more to learn!

  • i switched from a subscription HP inkjet to a nice brother color laser. the photos are i guess a bit worse quality, as they say, but it’s so worth the tradeoff. it’s built like a tank, is less bad at randomly not connecting to the computer, and i can just print what i want and it does it. i’m not sitting in the print menu thinking ‘hmm if i print this as color, that’s only 4 color pages left on the month, then they’ll charge me $1 for the next allotment’

and it’s just so fucking tiresome, and you just get bogged down in this pure banality and it’s so insane. like, the printer and ink are sitting right there in my house! why am i thinking like this??

  • plus doesn’t it just feel awful to use as software? the way lemmy looks and responds to clicks is night and day versus the le epic gamer kid dark mode awful buggy weird PC web view thing discord does where like, if you want to copy and paste you have to use their little tooltip menu which sucks instead of the system one. every time you launch it it forces you to wait 10 minutes for it to download every piddly little update which probably sucks and doesn’t matter…

lemmy is buggy and has its flaws as well of course but it’s just like…this is a good solid website. good bones. like the old days.

  • i started to read the article and thought ‘these are dumb alarmist charges, boys can’t even have hobbies anymore’, and i read this

The plane crashed into the Los Padres National Forest 35 minutes after take-off. Jacob hiked to the site and recovered the footage. He then uploaded the video entitled “I crashed my airplane” to YouTube on 23 December, which contained a promotion for a wallet company, prosecutors said.

and now i’m totally on their side

  • i mean i do hate tipping, it creates an uncomfortable power dynamic, having to sort of…‘bribe’ them like with these gig apps to get them to take your order sucks (versus like a proper pizza shop where you have 1st party guys who know the area and ups and downs of the job), menu prices and the shitty fees are already a joke, it’s just miserable all around

but i’m sure the minimum wage increase is little esp in NYC - it probably just feels like it cancels out. overall there needs to be better reform on this. depending on tips sucks

  • one of the few upsides of gig jobs is that you aren’t generally bound by the traditional grind like this - if you’re feeling bad on a monday, you can take that day off; if you’re bored on a sunday you can work, etc etc. i genuinely don’t think i could handle the 9-5 M-F rote button down shit without having a psychic break after 2 months

  • i imagine spotify at its core as a lot like mr burns’ heart

doing this is general is evil, doing this right before the holidays is intentionally cruel – a signal to fellow vampires and business goons that wE aRen’t AFRAid To mAKe THe touGH choICes!!!. i mean, i’ve been rooting for them to crash and burn for ages because their entire service and philosophy about music (sorry, ‘content’) is so utterly misguided and malignant. i’d rather go back to record labels than have this band of tech bro dipshits controlling everything
