I don’t mean that the physical aspect of logging was weird; ircII had per window logging even back then but it had to be manually set on.
I mean the social aspect of hanging out with people for years in a private chat room and logging them without telling them. Everyone in the group was surprised and annoyed to find out he did this it was a close knit group and we shared a lot in there. The internet was much smaller 30 years ago and far less privacy focused, we learned due to people like that with no chill!
Yeah all clients keep chat logs to some extent to allow you to scroll back etc. Some clients like IRSSI delete logs after 24 days I think, but Hexchat just lets logs grow indefinitely and leave it to you to set up deletion of old logs.
I never used IRC so idk much about the clients, but is it possible his client just did that as a packaged feature?
