Wikipedia used to be the go-to byword for “unreliable source”. Now it’s least unreliable source that Google’s “AI Overview” section or ChatGPT ever cites.
I give you Warren Buffetts investor relations website.
https://berkshirehathaway.com/It may not be pretty, but it cuts the bullshit and gets straight to the point.
A straight up HTML ad for GEICO? That means I can’t block it. Genius.
However, I have two thoughts regarding your personal expenditures that can save you real money. I’m suggesting that you call on the services of two subsidiaries of Berkshire: GEICO and Borsheim’s.
I estimate that about 40% of all auto drivers in the country can save money by insuring with GEICO. The figure is not 100% because insurers differ in their underwriting judgments, with some favoring drivers who live in certain geographical areas and work in certain occupations more than GEICO does.
This is the least bullshit I’ve ever seen in an advertisement. Acknowledges that it’s not cheaper for everyone, tells you to compare it to whatever you’re currently using.
Almost makes you want to hype a billionaire. Almost.
Honestly a static page that’s literally just text, a few hyperlinks, and a few lines to prettify is like, peak design. No bullshit. A 9 year old could design the site and that’s a complement.
You can run this site on a mobile phone from 2002 and it would run perfectly.
I can use my TUI based browser to use the site and have the same experience as every other user.
They’ve achieved a lightweight, ultra-compatible, informative site with just enough eye candy (those lines) to make the site feel at least as engaging as a newspaper.
This is brilliant, 10/10 would hire that web dev.
Edit: Single line -> lines, idk what happened my eyes shit the bed or something
Ant Accessible text is best accessible text.

You don’t need to, you can do this on your own.
It even has an ad!
I wonder how much Geico pays for that spot.
Probably nothing because he owns Geico, it’s just self-promotion
Well, based on their commercials I’d say it has to be less than 15% of their competitors’ revenue.
When I was a teenager, my dad tried to impress me with the bloated website of his new employer. Unskippable propaganda flash banners, baffling organization, messy color scheme etc. He asked me what I thought and I told it was hideous and terrible. He probably thought I was being spitefully contrarian but it really was an ugly site.
It can even be hosted for free in AWS with nothing but a publicly accessible S3 bucket.

How it looks on my phone. That ad sure does eat up some space.
“WEB page”
It’s not that bad
For a sec I thought I had dimentia since all the links were purple
I guess the design is the original from 1978.
The only problem with that site is it burns my retinas trying to read it lol
No, THIS is the https://bestmotherfucking.website/
Turn on the lights
Or just don’t scroll in bed at night
Screen is too bright if that happens, the easy way to set screen brightness is so a white background matches the brightness of a piece of white paper in the same area.
A piece of white paper in most places also burns my retinas. Light sensitivity is a bitch.
Fair enough, I also don’t like bright areas much.
You’re not squinting hard enough
spooky magic hands MAGIC COLOR SWAP more spooky hands
I was surprised to see Shein take off the way it did. The first and only time I ever visited that site, I thought, “For sure this has to be a scam.” The layout and design set off alarm bells in my head, like sites from earlier internet days that were guaranteed to give your computer a virus.
It was wild to find out that so many people legit shop there. But I guess I’m showing my age.
Amazing that this is the first thing I see after searching it
It looks like AliExpress’ home page
I miss the old aliexpress, where the search wasn’t a mangled mess of whoever’s paying for top position and filters existed and worked (somewhat)
Yeah you get better results with a search engine and “site:AliExpress.com”
There’s an xkcd about this, but I have no idea how to search for it.
Alt text:
I have never been lied to by data in a .txt file which has been hand-aligned
That can’t be very trustworthy, it’s a png! But then if it’s inaccurate does that mean png’s ARE trustworthy? But then if that’s the case then this is accurate in saying pngs aren’t trustworthy, but that would mean that it claiming pngs are inaccurate would be inaccurate itself which would mean…
Aligning figures the way you want to in Latex saps all the energy that would otherwise be dedicated to lying.
Where would .md fit in that graph I wonder…
Somewhere between .txt and .doc
If you have matrix, there is an xkcd not @xkcd:maunium.net
You can subscribe to always get new comics sent to you and also search for keywords.
There must be an xkcd for this too
Is there not an XKCD for there being an XKCD about everything?
There is not an xkcd for there not being an xkcd about this.
the xkcd app has a pretty good search function. got any keywords we can try?
I just remember it making a joke about if you find an old self-hosted webpage that’s just text on a background with no ads, no css, etc. it’s a very reliable source of information.
I remember when a payload of 10kb was too much and a one second loading time was unacceptable.
Saas seems to have increased that to 30mb and 10 seconds. Amazing progress.
This is so true, whenever a see something that’s obviously never been touched by the design department and is mostly just text I feel safe, secure and trust it by default.
Anything with flashy graphics is doubt before they prove themselves trustworthy.
Sounds like someone’s descent into conspiracy wackjobbery
nah, that all lives in short form video these days.
it’s the perfect format for it. just long enough to say something crazy, not long enough for you to ask questions about it.
that and social media. take this website for example. lemmy.ml and lemmygrad both have some veeeeery interesting ideas about the history of certain authoritarian governments.
Don’t forget hexbear (actually maybe do lol)
