My father snapped the timing belt in his turbo Passat at freeway speed many years ago. I suspect, but cannot prove, that he money shifted it. He reported that the noise it made was “bang.” I believe it.
There’s a couple common bits this age like boot lock, door locks either sticking or failing to the point they must be replaced, rust of course, rear springs aren’t common but expected due to age. Some the engines are a bit so so like the bls, the 130/140hp ones are well regarded if you don’t mind a turbo replacement due to age, mileage and often cus remap.
I knew the 1.6tdis are poop, I don’t know enough about the newer ones otherwise
VW enters the chat.
I had a mk2 Golf booked in to have the timing belt replaced, 1 week before it snapped.
2 weeks later it was crushed by a tank at Mallory race track.
Ouch.

Unplugging your cel doesn’t count.
I’m a Volvo owner with a CEL and I’m scared.
