WASHINGTON, July 30 (Reuters) - The United States is suspending a “de minimis” exemption that allowed low-value commercial shipments to be shipped to the United States without facing tariffs, the White House said on Wednesday.

Under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, packages valued at or under $800 sent to the U.S. outside of the international postal network will now face “all applicable duties” starting on August 29, the White House said.

Besides the taxes of it all, are we hiring tons more customs agents to process all of these shipments that used to be exempt? Besides paying more for the item, it is going to take waaaaaaaaay longer to receive an item like this now as well.

That’s just the tariff logic all over again. We’re ordering it overseas because they don’t make it here. We don’t have the resources or the knowledge to make it here anymore and taxing it isn’t going to do anything more money into the hands of the oligarchs.

It’s a grift to pay for the tax breaks for the super wealthy.

That doesn’t change the fact that people are going to order less, if only because they can afford less

Technically correct, but not to any point where it will have the intended consequence.

The vast majority of people will silently pay $18 instead of $12 for a shitty tiktok item because it’s not available locally. It’s primarily a tax on the masses, not some altruistic way to push manufacturing to the US.

Only as long as they can put it on debt. But the “vast majority” of Americans already can’t afford to buy the $12 thing, let alone the $18 one. At some point it’s not that they’ll choose to not buy more expensive stuff, it’s that they won’t have the ability. At which point, people will just buy less stuff.

The shitty tictok items costing more is just flat out good. That kind of waste needs to be eliminated anyways.

The bigger issues is products that actually matter, like washing machines and appliances
