Pepe is actually a reclaimed racist meme. Most of this 4chan racism about the frog is from 2016 or so. If you’re ever on twitch, you’ll see it all over the place because it’s a huge part of their culture.
Honestly you’re not alone. This is the first I’ve heard to any extent that Pepe was used by racists at all. I’ve seen some pretty heartfelt animations using the likeness and no hint to any extent that racism was somehow attached to it.
Maybe I’m not chronically online enough or in whatever channels where whatever you’re talking about is going on as I’m not even sure where it is I would go to ‘go back and look’. Are there like entire communities sharing pepe memes or something?
Pepe being a right wing meme is actually something that’s been going back over a decade now. Literally, it got so bad it was branded a hate symbol in 2016. There have been multiple news reports, documentaries, you name it. It has been completely co-opted and associated with the far right for that long.
