One of my many admirers just went through literally every single post or comment I’ve ever made to downvote. Is there a way to see who it is and save them from having to see my posts in the future?
Also, is that how blocking works? I know that I won’t see posts from someone I’ve blocked but does it also stop them from seeing/interacting with my content?
I recommend you touch grass. Valuing yourself by imaginary internet points is not going to do you any good.
That data is available is the ActivityPub but as far as I know, you don’t have access to the vote data as a Lemmy user. You would have access to this data if you were running your own Lemmy server.
But honestly, let it go. Someone stole fake Internet points from you. It costs you nothing but it cost them 5 minutes of their lives. You’re having a fight with some stranger that doesn’t value their own time. Value your time and stop feeding these kinds of energy vampires. You deserve better! Have a wonderful day my friend :)
Thank you. It’s not so much about the fake points, but when people start to get stalkery like that it makes me uncomfortable. I guess I could try to stop having unpopular opinions but it doesn’t seem likely.
If you think you are being brigaded you can talk to the admins to see if they can catch someone abusing the system, but otherwise trying to find the names of the people downvoting you is pretty stalker in itself. What are you going to do with that info?
Obviously they just want to go through THEIR history and downvote all THEIR comments with a vengeance. Just like any emotionally stable adult would do.
Lol, no it seems that I’ve misunderstood how blocking works on Lemmy. I had hoped to block them from seeing my content in the future since it clearly bothers them so much. From the responses here it seems like there’s nothing productive to be done.
Don’t bring further attention to it and they’ll likely move on. Someone once downvoted ten pages worth of my most recent comments but they never did it again.
you’re starting to get stalkery
Sounds like someone’s salty that they can’t go back and return the favor.
Ironically, your post made me curious as to what you said to get downvoted, so I went through and read your dumb comments. I didn’t see anything that looked like a positive contribution to the site, just you getting angry at anyone who doesn’t agree with you.
Lol with the amount of downvotes OP gets, how would they be able to tell if one person went through and downvotes all their posts?
I tend to respond in a tone I’m addressed with, but I am trying to do better.
try this instead. When someone insults you or says something to make you angry, reply with something sickeningly sweet and loving. Trust me. It’s a powerful weapon. kill them with kindness.
Use any of these:
I love you ❤️
You are loved.
Have a blissful day.
More often than not it has the effect of silencing them because it neutralizes their vitriol like pouring water on a fire.
Personally I’m not a fan of this approach because you don’t really believe what you’re saying to them, it’s more just being passive-aggressive/sarcastic.
My preferred approach is to try to understand someone’s position and trying to wrap my head around the fundamental disagreement between us. That’s assuming of course that I’m in the right headspace; I’m not immune to getting caught up in online toxicity.

the recipient of the message interprets it in a loving way because it’s probably exactly what they need to hear that no one ever tells them.
Do you have any proof of this or is it just something you want to believe is true? Because honestly I find it hard to believe.
Yes I’ve been that person before. And I’ve ended internet arguments with it from the other end as well. I’ve seen it work. And I’ve felt it work.
granted it’s not always successful, and if you hate it so much then it probably won’t work coming from either end for you, so whatever.
it sounds so stupid and the first time I did it I felt a little silly, but doing this really works. anyone who is angry with you (without a good reason at least) has no idea how to respond given genuine kindness in response to an attack. plus it’s nice to be a positive voice in the world, and I’m sure many people who are angry on the internet could benefit from being told that they matter and are loved :)
Also, try sending some flowers.

Because all internet strangers know each other’s home addresses.
There’s no place like 127.0.0.1

That or mailbombs.
You post a lot of controversial takes, I wouldn’t be surprised with the amount of downvotes. Also downvotes don’t matter.

Ouch, that sounds like a painful way to live. I’m sorry to hear that.
Uh, I recommend closing your internet connected devices for a week or 2. That sounds very unhealthy lol
Just for clarity, it’s not the number of downvotes. I don’t really care about that. However, I was looking through some of my old posts and I noticed that all of a sudden every single post had exactly one more down vote, which especially stands out on posts that literally nobody saw or voted on from months ago.
It doesn’t take a detective to see that an individual went through and downvoted every single post regardless of the topic or community.
I had hoped to see who the person was and just block them from seeing my content, but it looks like that is not how blocking works on Lemmy anyway. It seems more like muting somebody.
If you’re going to keep saying spicy things, your secret admirer should be able to keep booing you.
Trying to keep your public posts private is a fool’s errand.
Did someone get in a petty Internet fight?
I know, it’s an unhealthy habit.
I find I have much less Internet fights in the fediverse than I used to on commercial “social” media. Reddit and Facebook would bring out the worst of my pettiness 😅 I have had many lovely conversations on here.
Honestly, I think it’s due to the overall demographic here. I know there are younger folks, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the overall median age range on the fediverse was higher than Reddit. Although, I believe FB’s age demographic tends to skew older nowadays (younger generation has abandoned the platform while boomers and gen X have stuck with it), so maybe that theory doesn’t hold much weight.
That being said, I’ve also seen plenty of assholes here, but that’s to be expected with any online forum. Fortunately, they seem to be much less prominent compared to bigger platforms.
My brother is literally part of Facebook groups just for arguing politics. It’s like a drug addiction to him. It seems like such a weird use of energy and time. I like being on the fediverse because I feel like I have more genuine actual conversations. And not arguments.
It’s also possible that person was wondering what else you wrote and didn’t downvote the past posts out of spite, but because they actually read them and disagreed or disliked them too 😆
It could be, but I have content on a lot of different communities and topics. I know that the political stuff can be controversial, and that’s fine if people don’t like what they see. When someone goes through and is down voting comments that I made on stupid memes in a different community, that’s a little bit of a red flag.
In any case, it seems like there’s nothing productive to be done about it based on how lemmy works. At least I understand a little bit more about blocking and voting on this platform now. Always happy to learn.
How do you even know someone was down voting old posts?
On kbin you can see who has downvoted/upvoted your content. So if you view your comment on there you should be able to see it. The answer is no to your last question. Looking at your history I would just assume heavy upvotes or downvotes depending on what area of the fediverse you’re posting in.
I had the same idea but it seems only kbin users’ downvotes appear on kbin (but you can see lemmy users’ upvotes). Have you managed to see lemmy downvotes like this at some point?
kbin does not federate downvotes at all, as far as I know, so this wouldn’t be possible.
Kbin doesn’t federate downvotes because they do not have downvotes. Nor do they have upvotes.
We have Favorite, Reduce, and Boost.Yeah, highly relevant distinction, that.
I’ve never bothered no. Maybe I’m mistaken.
That seems like a weird feature to include, as I’d think it’d scale badly down the line if kbin becomes extremely popular. You’d be wasting a ton of resources having to query the database and retrieve potentially thousands of users for very popular posts/comments.
So does that mean someone I’ve blocked will continue to see and interact with my content but I just wouldn’t see their replies? Am I understanding it correctly?
Exactly that, correct
Yes
You can I guess if that vote by someone in your instance or maybe via the ActivityPub protocol.
Though points do not matter in Lemmy. There’s no algorithm so it does not have a effect nor are there karmas in Lemmy. Let it go bro.
No. Some well-adjusted person apparently followed me to do the same. As funny/sad as that is, I’m grateful for how sane it makes me feel.
Blocking probably does not work - it prevents you from seeing people’s posts and comments, that seems to be about it.
If you run a server…
#!/bin/sh INSTANCE=myinstance.com psql -U lemmy -c "SELECT (person.name || '@' || instance.domain) AS user, ('https://' || instance.domain || '/u/' || person.name) AS their_instance_url, ('https://${INSTANCE}/u/' || person.name || '@' || instance.domain) AS url, comment_like.score FROM comment_like JOIN person ON comment_like.person_id = person.id JOIN instance ON person.instance_id = instance.id WHERE comment_id = $1;"
Edit: lol@ the downvotes. Do people think lemmy operates on the principles of magic? Sorry my SQL offends you.
You are being downvoted because you are shedding the actual truth about what is going in Israel right now. And lemmy doesnt like that.
I welcome the influx of downvotes coming towards me.

Sir, this is a Lemmy.

Report it to the admins.
I see why you are getting downvoted.
Thanks for alerting me to your “content”. I did leave some downvotes on your most unfortunate comments.
Well, they can’t all be hits.
Well, if you were an artist and your comment would be songs, and I were your producer, I would have dropped you a long time ago.
Just join a downvote disabled server and leave this nonsense behind.
