Everyone’s brains have cells that manufacture dopamine, receptors that detect dopamine levels, and cleaner proteins that keep your brain from just being full of dopamine all the time.
My cleaner proteins are overpowered, so the dopamine is rarely in my brain long enough to get detected, so I don’t get the “good job sport/hamster treat button” reward feeling unless the dopamine burst is REALLY STRONG, like the first few times I accomplish or learn something new.
That’s why I struggle with brushing my teeth or doing the dishes or making it to appointments on time or doing my homework, but I thrive off of picking up new hobbies that I’m sure I’ll stick with, this time, and not drop the moment I didn’t spend a bunch of money on tools and materials for, like all the previous hobbies.
It’s why I literally cannot form habits.
So I take a medication that inhibits those dopamine vacuums. The dopamine gets produced and gets to stick around long enough in my brain juices that the receptors can take a meaningful poll of my levels. Now when I press the button, the hamster treat comes out!
For decades I thought I was just lazy, and bad, because everyone around me was telling me that I just needed to apply myself. So much potential. It turns out my brain is just too good at one very narrowly specific thing that makes it hard for me to be good at anything.
And meditation or cutting back on sugar or just pushing through it, none of that did a goddamn thing because it’s not a moral failure, it’s not that I’m not trying, it’s that my brain needs a little help managing chemicals.Wow, that matches my experience exactly.

Congratulations, you may have ADHD (one of us one of us <cheer>). The applicable drugs are dopamine reuptake inhibitors (such as Ritalin).
Name-brand Concerta, which is methylphenidate packaged in some proprietary time-delay system. The time-delay system is crucial, because you extremely do not want the full dosage dumped into your system all at once, or in irregular batches, and apparently the off-brand manufacturers just haven’t cracked it. I don’t think that’s just propaganda.

Woke messaging has a problem with exaggeration, the same as all political messaging does. You guys say things like “all gender identities are social constructs,” when that’s clearly not the case. You say things like “all racism is due to systemic racism,” when clearly that’s not the case. People see this. They’re not stupid. They see that your assertions are wrong. I think that parts of your statement are likely correct but I doubt a lot of it. The comment you replied to was correct though it is likely more nuanced. That is where your point could play in (which is what enables much exaggeration used by opponents) but your examples show me that you are quite biased (not that I am not) and not necessarily part of those who would be willing to listen to the whole thing.

I would recommend we stop using a term altogether and simply make our points. Words can always be deconstructed and redefined. The fact that we create and cling to them is our own fault. “Woke” was a term created by the Left and redefined by the Right. It’s very frustrating to me how we’ve totally cooperated with way the Right is redefining the term by responding to it as though they have a legit understanding of it. Which we have done simply by responding. So many of us are like “they don’t know what it means!” But they do. We defined it for them, and now we just don’t like that they’re using it to attack us. The definition of “woke” is “liberal bullshit.” And it has meaning to all conservatives; the fact that liberals think it’s meaningless doesn’t matter. We don’t even use the term anymore, because we’ve acquiesced to the conservative definition. That means they’ve won, with respect to that specific term. So, stop using it. Let them have it. Move on.

By the way back then you didn’t have influencers and youtubers telling you what to think, and there were no 6 hours video assay telling you how bad the lastest disney movie (because no other animated movie is worth discussing) is. Honestly back then we either turned on the tv or pop in some vhs or later on dvd and be happy about it. I know it’s wild to think but we didn’t have internt with us all time.
We didn’t have the youtubers or Instagram thots; but we sure had influencers in the form of “talking heads” on television and radio.

Even before that there was Walter Cronkite, then Peter Jennings.
That was back in an era where everyone watched the same “influencers”. The good part of that was that for the most part, these influencers were rigorously fact checked so the people who watched them agreed on the same set of facts, and those facts were more or less true.
On the other hand, there were times when these “influencers” were biased or even hid the truth. The bias was often something they even had trouble noticing. Like, they all believed communism was a big threat, or that police were trustworthy. As for hiding the truth, sometimes when a politician got in trouble the news would drop the story because of their deference to power. They’d also sometimes try to repeat whatever the government said as truth without checking it, or not investigate bad things the government was doing overseas because they saw that as being patriotic.
Overall, I think it was better when everybody agreed on most things, even if sometimes the news / “influencers” were biased. At least it meant that the government was more or less functional. At least it meant that people were relatively civil with each-other.
